Say, "I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind.
What does the Qur'an say about the whisper that leads to sin, and breaking it?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 114:1–6 Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind, the King of mankind, the God of mankind, FROM THE EVIL OF THE SNEAKING WHISPERER, WHO WHISPERETH IN THE HEARTS OF MANKIND, OF THE JINN AND OF MANKIND. In as ONE PASSAGE because the whole surah is one sentence, the threefold naming of God precedes the threat, and the last verse says the whisperers are of BOTH kinds - human and jinn.
- 02 7:200–201 AND IF A SLANDER FROM THE DEVIL WOUND THEE, THEN SEEK REFUGE IN GOD. Lo, He is Hearer, Knower. Lo, those who ward off evil, when a glamour from the devil troubleth them, THEY DO BUT REMEMBER, AND BEHOLD THEM SEERS. In as ONE PASSAGE because 7:201 gives the method - remembering - and describes its effect as sight returning.
- 03 20:120–121 But the devil whispered to him, saying: O ADAM, SHALL I SHOW THEE THE TREE OF IMMORTALITY AND POWER THAT WASTETH NOT AWAY? Then they twain ate thereof. In as ONE PASSAGE because it is the first whisper in the Qur'an and its content is quoted - and what it offers is deathlessness.
- 04 50:16 We verily created man and WE KNOW WHAT HIS SOUL WHISPERETH TO HIM, and We are nearer to him than his jugular vein. Here the whisper comes from a person's own soul, and God is said to know it and to be nearer than the jugular vein. It also appears in What does 'closer than the jugular vein' mean in the Qur'an? and What does the Qur'an say about God's nearness in loneliness?, for different reasons.
- 05 14:22 And Satan saith, when the matter hath been decided: LO, GOD PROMISED YOU A PROMISE OF TRUTH; AND I PROMISED YOU, THEN FAILED YOU. AND I HAD NO POWER OVER YOU SAVE THAT I CALLED UNTO YOU AND YE OBEYED ME. So blame not me, but blame yourselves. In because it is Satan's own account of the mechanism, delivered at the Judgment, and it disclaims all power except calling.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The Qur'an names the whisper, quotes one, and then has the whisperer explain how little power he has.
114 is the whole subject in six lines. God is named three times - Lord of mankind, King of mankind, God of mankind - before the threat is named at all. Then: THE SNEAKING WHISPERER, WHO WHISPERS IN THE HEARTS OF MANKIND. And the last verse, which is easy to miss: OF THE JINN AND OF MANKIND. The whisperers include people.
20:120 quotes the first one and its content is worth attention. It is not an invitation to disobey. It is an offer: SHALL I SHOW THEE THE TREE OF IMMORTALITY AND POWER THAT WASTETH NOT AWAY? What is dangled is deathlessness and a kingdom that does not decay.
14:22 is the most important verse here, because it is Satan speaking at the Judgment about his own method: GOD PROMISED YOU A PROMISE OF TRUTH; AND I PROMISED YOU, THEN FAILED YOU. AND I HAD NO POWER OVER YOU SAVE THAT I CALLED UNTO YOU AND YE OBEYED ME. SO BLAME NOT ME, BUT BLAME YOURSELVES. The whole apparatus is reduced to a call that was answered.
50:16 complicates it usefully: God knows WHAT HIS SOUL WHISPERETH TO HIM. There the whisper is a person's own soul, so not every whisper in the text has an external author.
And the breaking of it, at 7:200-201, is two words long: SEEK REFUGE. Then the description of what happens in those who do - when a glamour from the devil troubles them, THEY DO BUT REMEMBER, AND BEHOLD THEM SEERS. Remembrance, and sight returns.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 114:1–6, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 5 passages, each with every cleared translation
5 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Verily, they who fear God, when some phantom from Satan toucheth them, remember Him, and lo! they see clearly
As to those who are righteous, when an evil suggestion from Satan assails them, they remember God and behold! they begin to see aright

20:120 Seytaane sonwonsini faade e makko; o wi'i: eeyma Aadama, hara yo mi tinndine e leggal luttineede ngal e laamu ngu follotaako ngu?"
20:121 Ɓe ñaami e maggal, feeñani ɓe mettefooji maɓɓe ɗin, ɓe naati e suddirgol e dow maɓɓe immorde e kaaki Aljanna o, Aadama yeddi Joomi makko o majji.
Taigi Adamas (Adomas) nepakluso savo Viešpačiui, taigi jis paklydo.
20:120 Sheyxaanni gara isaatti hasaasee: nijedhe “Yaa Aadam! Gara muka (as keessa) turiinsaatiifi mootummaa hin dhabamne irratti si qajeelchuu?” [18]
20:121 Isaan lamaan ishee (mukattii irraadhoowwaman) irraa nyaatani; qaamni saalaa isaanii isaaniif mul’atte; baala jannataa irraa uf irratti maxxansuu eegalan, Aadam (ajaja) Gooftaa isaa didee dogoggore.

Basi msinilaumu mimi, bali jilaumuni wenyewe. Mimi siwezi kuwa mtetezi wenu, wala nyinyi hamuwezi kuwa watetezi wangu. Hakika mimi nilikufuru tangu zamani huko kunishirikisha kwenu na Mwenyezi Mungu. Hakika madhalimu wana adhabu chungu.

They will emerge before God, altogether. The weak will say to those who were proud, "We were your followers, can you protect us at all against God's punishment?" They will say, "Had God guided us, we would have guided you. It is the same for us; whether we mourn, or are patient; there is no asylum for us."
They all come forth unto their Lord. Then those who were despised say unto those who were scornful: We were unto you a following, can ye then avert from us aught of Allah's doom? They say: Had Allah guided us, we should have guided you. Whether we rage or patiently endure is (now) all one for us; we have no place of refuge
They all come out to God; and the weak say to those who were big with pride, 'We were followers of yours, can ye now avail us aught against God's torment?' They say, 'If God had guided us we would have guided you. It is the same to us if we are agonized or if we are penitent, we have no escape
All mankind shall come forth before God; and the weak shall say to the men of might, "Verily, we were your followers: will ye not then relieve us of some part of the vengeance of God?" They shall say, "If God had guided us, we surely had guided you. It is now all one whether we be impatient, or endure with patience. We have no escape
And they shall all come forth into the presence of God at the last day: And the weak among them shall say unto those who behaved themselves arrogantly, verily we were your followers on earth; will ye not therefore avert from us some part of the divine vengeance? They shall answer, if God had directed us aright, we had certainly directed you. It is equal unto us whether we bear our torments impatiently, or whether we endure them with patience: For we have no way to escape

Do you not see how God presents a parable? A good word is like a good tree-its root is firm, and its branches are in the sky.
Seest thou not how Allah coineth a similitude: A goodly saying, as a goodly tree, its root set firm, its branches reaching into heaven
Dost thou not see how God strikes out a parable? A good word is like a good tree whose root is firm, and whose branches are in the sky
Seest thou not to what God likeneth a good word? To a good tree: its root firmly fixed, and its branches in the Heaven
Dost thou not see how God putteth forth a parable; representing a good word, as a good tree, whose root is firmly fixed in the earth, and whose branches reach unto heaven

Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 114:1-6, 7:200-201, 20:120-121, 50:16, 14:22, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - the + sneaking + whisperer; who + whispereth + in + the + hearts + of + mankind; if + a + slander + from + the + devil + wound + thee; when + they + are + touched + by + an + evil + thought; satan + whispered + to + him. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
Correction record, 2026-09-17. In the answer, a claim that the same Arabic verb is used at 50:16 was removed, because no source a reader can check is given for it; at 50:16, a claim that the verse uses the same Arabic verb was removed, because no source a reader can check is given for it. The verses shown and their translations are unchanged.
