Those who disbelieve say, "Why was the Quran not revealed to him at once?" Thus in order to strengthen your heart thereby, and We revealed it in stages.
Why was the Qur'an revealed gradually, by its own account?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 25:32–33 And those who disbelieve say: WHY IS THE QUR'AN NOT REVEALED UNTO HIM ALL AT ONCE? Thus it is that We may STRENGTHEN THY HEART THEREWITH; and We have arranged it in right order. And they bring thee no similitude but We bring thee the Truth and a better interpretation. The objection and the answer stand consecutively here, and the reason given is about the Prophet’s heart rather than about the audience.
- 02 17:106 And it is a Qur'an that WE HAVE DIVIDED, THAT THOU MAYST RECITE IT UNTO MANKIND AT INTERVALS; and We have revealed it by successive revelation. This verse gives a second reason — delivery at intervals to the hearers — which is not the reason 25:32 gives. The studies on the first revelation and on reward per letter carry it too, for different reasons.
- 03 20:114 HASTEN NOT (O MUHAMMAD) WITH THE QUR'AN ERE ITS REVELATION HATH BEEN PERFECTED UNTO THEE, and say: my Lord, increase me in knowledge. This verse instructs the Prophet not to run ahead of the revelation, and joins that instruction to a prayer for more knowledge. The study on seeking knowledge carries it too, for a different reason.
- 04 75:16–19 STIR NOT THY TONGUE HEREWITH TO HASTEN IT. Lo, upon Us resteth the putting together thereof and the reading thereof. And when We read it, follow thou the reading. Then lo, upon Us resteth the explanation thereof. This passage repeats the instruction not to hurry, and assigns the putting together, the reading and the explaining to God. The study on preservation carries it too, for a different reason.
- 05 16:101 And WHEN WE PUT A REVELATION IN PLACE OF (ANOTHER) REVELATION - and God knoweth best what He revealeth - THEY SAY: LO! THOU ART BUT INVENTING. Most of them know not. This verse records the objection the piecemeal method actually provoked — that he is inventing it. The study on abrogation carries it too, for a different reason.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The Qur’an records an objection that it was not delivered all at once. Its answer is that gradual revelation strengthened the Prophet’s heart and was arranged or recited in a deliberate sequence (25:32). Qur’an 17:106 gives a related purpose: the text was divided so it could be recited to people at intervals.
Other passages instruct the Prophet not to hurry the revelation or move his tongue hastily as it is being delivered (20:114; 75:16–19). These verses place collection, recitation and clarification under divine responsibility and portray reception as a process rather than possession of a completed book from the beginning.
The text therefore gives at least two connected reasons for gradual delivery: to sustain the messenger and to address people over time. It also allowed the revelation to respond within a developing mission. The detailed chronology and circumstances of individual passages, however, depend on historical and interpretive sources outside these verses.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 25:32–33, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 5 passages, each with every cleared translation
5 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

And those who disbelieve say: Why is the Qur'an not revealed unto him all at once? (It is revealed) thus that We may strengthen thy heart therewith; and We have arranged it in right order
Those who misbelieve said, 'Unless the Qur'an be sent down to him all at once...!' - thus - that we may stablish thy heart therewith, did we reveal it piecemeal
And the infidels say, "Unless the Koran be sent down to him all at once. . . ." But in this way would we stablish thy heart by it; in parcels have we parcelled it out to thee
The unbelievers say, unless the Koran be sent down unto him entire at once, we will not believe. But in this manner have We revealed it, that We might confirm thy heart thereby, and We have dictated it gradually, by distinct parcels

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

We are well aware that they say, "It is a human being who is teaching him." But the tongue of him they allude to is foreign, while this is a clear Arabic tongue.
And We know well that they say: Only a man teacheth him. The speech of him at whom they falsely hint is outlandish, and this is clear Arabic speech
We knew that they said, 'It is only some mortal who teaches him.' - The tongue of him they lean towards is barbarous, and this is plain Arabic
We also know that they say, "Surely a certain person teacheth him." But the tongue of him at whom they hint is foreign, while this Koran is in the plain Arabic
We also know that they say, verily, a certain man teacheth him to compose the Koran. The tongue of the person unto whom they incline, is a foreign tongue; but this, wherein the Koran is written, is the perspicuous Arabic tongue
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it5 of the 6 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 25:32-33, 17:106, 20:114, 75:16-19, 16:101, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - why + is + the + qur'an + not + revealed + unto + him + all + at + once; that + we + may + strengthen + thy + heart + therewith; we + have + divided + it + that + thou + mayst + recite + it + unto + mankind + at + intervals; hasten + not + with + the + qur'an. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
Editorial revision. Reviewer: AALAMIN Remaining Studies Editorial Review, Volume 1. Version date: 2026-09-16. Correction history: the plain-words answer above replaces the version signed earlier, and this study's inclusion reasons were rewritten as plain English. Two corrections previously carried inside the reasons themselves are recorded here instead: at 20:114 an earlier signed version left out Pickthall’s (O MUHAMMAD), and at 16:101 it left out his brackets around (ANOTHER) and his LO!; all are restored. The Arabic, the translations and the source receipts are unchanged.
