Fight those who do not believe in God, nor in the Last Day, nor forbid what God and His Messenger have forbidden, nor abide by the religion of truth-from among those who received the Scripture-until they pay the due tax, willingly or unwillingly.
Does the Qur'an command fighting Jews and Christians until they pay jizya (9:29)?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 9:29 The verse the question rests on. Pickthall has "Fight against such of those who have been given the Scripture as believe not in Allah nor the Last Day", and all five end with a payment: Rodwell has "until they pay tribute out of hand, and they be humbled". Itani has "until they pay the due tax".
- 02 9:28 The verse just before, which opens the passage. Sale has "let them not therefore come near unto the holy temple", and the verse speaks to a fear of want.
- 03 60:8 A verse on those who have not fought. Itani has "God does not prohibit you from dealing with them kindly and equitably".
- 04 60:9 The verse that names who is excluded. Pickthall has "Allah forbiddeth you only those who warred against you on account of religion", and what is forbidden is to "make friends of them".
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The command at 9:29 is printed in all five. The words 'Jews' and 'Christians' are not printed in the verse in any of the five. It names those of the people of the Scripture who do not believe in God or the Last Day and do not forbid what God and His Messenger forbid. Sale has "Fight against them who believe not in God, nor in the last day", and then "of those unto whom the scriptures have been delivered".
The verse ends with a payment. Pickthall has "until they pay the tribute readily, being brought low". Palmer has "until they pay the tribute by their hands and be as little ones". Itani has "until they pay the due tax, willingly or unwillingly". The word 'jizya' is printed in none of the five.
The verse before opens the passage. At 9:28 Palmer has "they shall not then approach the Sacred Mosque".
At 60:8 and 60:9 the five draw a line by whether a people fought against the believers. Rodwell has "God doth not forbid you to deal with kindness and fairness toward those who have not made war upon you on account of your religion". At 60:9 Itani has "God prohibits you from befriending those who fought against you over your religion".
So the text prints a command to fight some of the people of the Scripture, ending in a payment, beside verses that allow kindness to those who have not fought. The amount, the terms and the practice of the payment are not in these verses; they rest on jurisprudence, which this platform does not show.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this rests on
Opens with 9:29, widening across 4 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

4 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Enyi mlioamini!
Bu sebeple bu yıldan sonra Mescid-i Haram’a yaklaşmasınlar. Eğer fakirlikten korkuyorsanız, dilerse Allah sizi ihsanı ile zengin kılacaktır. Şüphesiz Allah Alîm'dir, Hakîm'dir.

O you who believe! When believing women come to you emigrating, test them. God is Aware of their faith. And if you find them to be faithful, do not send them back to the unbelievers. They are not lawful for them, nor are they lawful for them. But give them what they have spent. You are not at fault if you marry them, provided you give them their compensation. Then, if ye know them for true believers, send them not back unto the disbelievers. They are not lawful for them (the disbelievers), nor are they (the disbelievers) lawful for them. That is God's judgment: He judges between you, for God is knowing, wise
O Believers! when believing women come over to you as refugees (Mohadjers), then make TRIAL of them. God best knoweth their faith; but if ye have also ascertained their faith, let them not go back to the infidels; they are not lawful for them, nor are the unbelievers lawful for these women. But give them back what they have spent for their dowers. No crime shall it be in you to marry them, provided ye give them their dowers. Do not retain any right in the infidel women, but demand back what you have spent for their dowers, and let the unbelievers demand back what they have spent for their wives. This is the ordinance of God which He ordaineth among you: and God is Knowing, Wise
O true believers, when believing women come unto you as refugees, try them: God well knoweth their faith. And if ye know them to be true believers, send them not back to the infidels: They are not lawful for the unbelievers to have in marriage; neither are the unbelievers lawful for them. But give their unbelieving husbands what they shall have expended for their dowers. Nor shall it be any crime in you if ye marry them, provided ye give them their dowries. And retain not the patronage of the unbelieving women: But demand back that which ye have expended for the dowry of such of your wives as go over to the unbelievers; and let them demand back that which they have expended for the dowry of those who come over to you. This is the judgment of God, which He establisheth among you: And God is knowing and wise

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it1 of the 1 paragraphs signed with this study
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
These verses were chosen from the question's own verse and the verses that speak to who is fought and who is not. A probe for 'jizya', 'jizyah', 'tribute', 'poll-tax' or 'poll tax' returns 16 lines at six verses; 'jizya' is printed in none of the five, and 9:29 is the only one of the six where a payment ends fighting. 9:28 is here because 9:29 follows it. 60:8 and 60:9 are here because they draw the line between those who have fought and those who have not. This study does not answer how much the payment was, who paid it, or how it was set. Those matters rest on jurisprudence and history, a layer this platform does not hold or show.
