When the Sacred Months have passed, kill the polytheists wherever you find them. And capture them, and besiege them, and lie in wait for them at every ambush. But if they repent, and perform the prayers, and pay the alms, then let them go their way. God is Most Forgiving, Most Merciful.
What does the Qur'an say about idolaters (mushrikun)?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 9:5–6 Then, when the sacred months have passed, SLAY THE IDOLATERS WHEREVER YE FIND THEM... but if they repent and establish worship and pay the poor-due, then leave their way free. AND IF ANYONE OF THE IDOLATERS SEEKETH THY PROTECTION, THEN PROTECT HIM SO THAT HE MAY HEAR THE WORD OF GOD, AND AFTERWARD CONVEY HIM TO HIS PLACE OF SAFETY. In as ONE PASSAGE because 9:6 is the verse immediately after the most quoted sentence in the anti-Qur'an literature, and it grants safe conduct, a hearing, and an escort home to the very people 9:5 names. Splitting them is the single most consequential misquotation of this text.
- 02 6:108 Revile not those unto whom they pray beside God, lest they wrongfully revile God through ignorance. In because it protects their worship from insult even while rejecting it. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about disputing with others 'in the best way'? and the study What does the Qur'an say about justice toward non-Muslims?, with different reasons there.
- 03 9:28 O ye who believe, THE IDOLATERS ONLY ARE UNCLEAN. So let them not come near the Inviolable Place of Worship after this their year. In because it is a harsh verse and must be shown, and because what it actually imposes is an exclusion from one site.
- 04 60:8 God forbiddeth you not those who warred not against you on account of religion and drove you not out from your homes, that ye should show them kindness and deal justly with them. In because it draws the line by conduct rather than by creed, and the category it protects is defined without reference to belief. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about justice toward non-Muslims?, with a different reason there.
- 05 2:256 THERE IS NO COMPULSION IN RELIGION. The right direction is henceforth distinct from error. In because it is the general principle the rest must be read against. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about religious freedom and 'no compulsion'?, and by the study Does "no compulsion in religion" still stand - and is cancellation a question the verse asks?
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
This study exists mainly to put two consecutive verses in front of a reader.
9:5 is the sentence most often quoted against the Qur'an: SLAY THE IDOLATERS WHEREVER YE FIND THEM. It is real, and the study Does the Qur'an tell Muslims to kill unbelievers wherever they find them? works through its context in full.
9:6 is the next verse. AND IF ANYONE OF THE IDOLATERS SEEKETH THY PROTECTION, THEN PROTECT HIM SO THAT HE MAY HEAR THE WORD OF GOD, AND AFTERWARD CONVEY HIM TO HIS PLACE OF SAFETY.
Three obligations, to a member of the category just named: grant asylum, let him hear, and then ESCORT HIM SAFELY HOME - not convert him, not detain him. And the reason given for the safe conduct is that he is a people who do not know.
9:5 itself ends with an exit that is also usually cut: if they repent and establish worship and pay the poor-due, LEAVE THEIR WAY FREE.
The harshest remaining verse is 9:28 - THE IDOLATERS ONLY ARE UNCLEAN - and what it actually imposes is exclusion from one place of worship.
Against all of it stand 6:108, which forbids insulting their gods; 60:8, which permits kindness and justice toward any who did not fight or expel; and 2:256, which denies compulsion in religion outright.
A reader who has met only 9:5 has met a quarter of a passage. That is the finding.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 9:5–6, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 5 passages, each with every cleared translation
5 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Then, when the sacred months have passed, slay the idolaters wherever ye find them, and take them (captive), and besiege them, and prepare for them each ambush. But if they repent and establish worship and pay the poor-due, then leave their way free. Lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful
But when the sacred months are passed away, kill the idolaters wherever ye may find them; and take them, and besiege them, and lie in wait for them in every place of observation; but if they repent, and are steadfast in prayer, and give alms, then let them go their way; verily, God is forgiving and merciful
And when the sacred months are passed, kill those who join other gods with God wherever ye shall find them; and seize them, besiege them, and lay wait for them with every kind of ambush: but if they shall convert, and observe prayer, and pay the obligatory alms, then let them go their way, for God is Gracious, Merciful
And when the months wherein ye are not allowed to attack them shall be past, kill the idolaters wheresoever ye shall find them, and take them prisoners, and besiege them, and lay wait for them in every convenient place. But if they shall repent, and observe the appointed times of prayer, and pay the legal alms, dismiss them freely; for God is gracious and merciful

9:5 Haram aylar çıkınca, Allah’a şirk koşanları artık bulduğunuz yerde öldürün, onları yakalayıp hapsedin ve her gözetleme yerine oturup onları gözetleyin. Eğer tevbe ederler, namazı kılıp zekâtı da verirlerse kendilerini serbest bırakın. Şüphesiz Allah çok bağışlayıcıdır, çok merhamet edicidir.
9:6 Eğer Allah’a ortak koşanlardan biri senden eman/sığınma talebinde bulunursa ona eman ver.

And a proclamation from Allah and His messenger to all men on the day of the Greater Pilgrimage that Allah is free from obligation to the idolaters, and (so is) His messenger. So, if ye repent, it will be better for you; but if ye are averse, then know that ye cannot escape Allah. Give tidings (O Muhammad) of a painful doom to those who disbelieve
A proclamation from God and His Apostle to the people on the day of the greater pilgrimage, that God is clear of the idolaters as is His Apostle! If then ye repent it is better for you; but if ye turn your backs, then know that ye cannot make God helpless. Give to those who misbelieve glad tidings of grievous woe
And a proclamation on the part of God and His Apostle to the people on the day of the greater pilgrimage, that God is free from any engagement with the votaries of other gods with God as is His Apostle! If, therefore, ye turn to God it will be better for you; but if ye turn back, then know that ye shall not weaken God: and to those who believe not, announce thou a grievous punishment
And a declaration from God and his apostle unto the people, on the day of the greater pilgrimage, that God is clear of the idolaters, and his apostle also. Wherefore if ye repent, this will be better for you; but if ye turn back, know that ye shall not weaken God: And denounce unto those who believe not, a painful punishment

Except for those among the polytheists with whom you had made a treaty, and did not violate any of its terms, nor aided anyone against you. So fulfill the treaty with them to the end of its term. God loves the righteous.
Excepting those of the idolaters with whom ye (Muslims) have a treaty, and who have since abated nothing of your right nor have supported anyone against you. (As for these), fulfil their treaty to them till their term. Lo! Allah loveth those who keep their duty (unto Him)
Except to those of the idolaters with whom ye have made a league, and who then have not failed you at all, and have not backed up any one against you. Fulfill for them then your covenant until the time agreed upon with them; verily, God loves those who fear
But this concerneth not those Polytheists with whom ye are in league, and who shall have afterwards in no way failed you, nor aided anyone against you. Observe, therefore, engagement with them through the whole time of their treaty: for God loveth those who fear Him
Except such of the idolaters with whom ye shall have entered into a league, and who afterwards shall not fail you in any instance, nor assist any other against you. Wherefore perform the covenant which ye shall have made with them, until their time shall be elapsed; for God loveth those who fear him

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. O you who believe! When believing women come to you emigrating, test them. God is Aware of their faith. And if you find them to be faithful, do not send them back to the unbelievers. They are not lawful for them, nor are they lawful for them. But give them what they have spent. You are not at fault if you marry them, provided you give them their compensation. And do not hold on to ties with unbelieving women, but demand what you have spent, and let them demand what they have spent. This is the rule of God; He rules among you. God is Knowing and Wise.
O ye who believe! When believing women come unto you as fugitives, examine them. Allah is Best Aware of their faith. Then, if ye know them for true believers, send them not back unto the disbelievers. They are not lawful for them (the disbelievers), nor are they (the disbelievers) lawful for them. And give them (the disbelievers) that which they have spent (upon them). And it is no sin for you to marry such women when ye have given them their dues. And hold not to the ties of disbelieving women; and ask for (the return of) that which ye have spent; and let them (the disbelievers) ask for that which they have spent. That is the judgment of Allah. He judgeth between you. Allah is Knower, Wise
O ye who believe! when there come believing women who have fled, then try them: God knows their faith. If ye know them to be believers do not send them back to the misbelievers;- they are not lawful for them, nor are the men lawful for these; - but give them what they have expended, and it shall be no crime against you that ye marry them, when ye have given them their hire. And do not ye retain a right over misbelieving women; but ask for what ye have spent, and let them ask for what they have spent. That is God's judgment: He judges between you, for God is knowing, wise
O Believers! when believing women come over to you as refugees (Mohadjers), then make TRIAL of them. God best knoweth their faith; but if ye have also ascertained their faith, let them not go back to the infidels; they are not lawful for them, nor are the unbelievers lawful for these women. But give them back what they have spent for their dowers. No crime shall it be in you to marry them, provided ye give them their dowers. Do not retain any right in the infidel women, but demand back what you have spent for their dowers, and let the unbelievers demand back what they have spent for their wives. This is the ordinance of God which He ordaineth among you: and God is Knowing, Wise
O true believers, when believing women come unto you as refugees, try them: God well knoweth their faith. And if ye know them to be true believers, send them not back to the infidels: They are not lawful for the unbelievers to have in marriage; neither are the unbelievers lawful for them. But give their unbelieving husbands what they shall have expended for their dowers. Nor shall it be any crime in you if ye marry them, provided ye give them their dowries. And retain not the patronage of the unbelieving women: But demand back that which ye have expended for the dowry of such of your wives as go over to the unbelievers; and let them demand back that which they have expended for the dowry of those who come over to you. This is the judgment of God, which He establisheth among you: And God is knowing and wise

Have you not considered him who argued with Abraham about his Lord, because God had given him sovereignty? Abraham said, "My Lord is He who gives life and causes death." Whereupon the infidel was confounded; for God directeth not the ungoldly people
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 9:5-6, 6:108, 9:28, 60:8, 2:256, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - if + anyone + of + the + idolaters + seeketh + thy + protection; convey + him + to + his + place + of + safety; revile + not + those + unto + whom + they + pray; the + idolaters + are + unclean; kill + the + idolaters + wherever. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.

A dashed outline marks a tag the editors handle with extra care. It describes how this study is filed and shown, not what the verses say.
