O people! Fear your Lord, who created you from a single soul, and created from it its mate, and propagated from them many men and women. And revere God whom you ask about, and the parents. Surely, God is Watchful over you.
What does the Qur'an say about keeping kinship ties (silat al-rahim)?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 4:1 O mankind, be careful of your duty to your Lord Who created you from a single soul and from it created its mate, and from them twain hath spread abroad a multitude of men and women. BE CAREFUL OF YOUR DUTY TOWARD GOD IN WHOM YE CLAIM YOUR RIGHTS OF ONE ANOTHER, AND TOWARD THE WOMBS THAT BARE YOU. In because it names the wombs - the word the whole subject takes its name from - in the same clause as duty to God, and because the verse grounds it in common descent from one soul.
- 02 13:21 SUCH AS UNITE THAT WHICH GOD HATH COMMANDED SHOULD BE JOINED, and fear their Lord, and dread a woeful reckoning. In because it is the positive form of the formula and describes those who do it as also fearing the reckoning.
- 03 13:25 And those who break the covenant of God after ratifying it, AND SEVER THAT WHICH GOD HATH COMMANDED SHOULD BE JOINED, and make mischief in the earth - theirs is the curse and theirs the ill abode. In because it is the negative form and it sits in a triad with covenant-breaking and corruption. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about corruption in the land (fasad)?, with a different reason there.
- 04 47:22–23 Would ye then, if ye were given the command, work corruption in the land AND SEVER YOUR TIES OF KINSHIP? Such are they whom God curseth so that He deafeneth them and maketh blind their eyes. In as ONE PASSAGE because it is the one verse that names KINSHIP explicitly as the thing severed, which fixes the meaning of the general formula. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about corruption in the land (fasad)?, with a different reason there.
- 05 17:26 GIVE THE KINSMAN HIS DUE, and the needy, and the wayfarer, and squander not thy wealth in wantonness. In because the obligation is expressed as a DUE owed rather than a kindness offered, and kin come first. ALSO CARRIED by two other studies, with different reasons there.
- 06 23:101 And when the trumpet is blown THERE WILL BE NO KINSHIP AMONG THEM THAT DAY, nor will they ask of one another. In because it states the limit - the ties do not survive the Day - which is the counterweight the study needs. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about the trumpet blast?, with a different reason there.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The Arabic phrase this question names is built on the word for a womb, and 4:1 is where the Qur'an makes that connection.
BE CAREFUL OF YOUR DUTY TOWARD GOD IN WHOM YE CLAIM YOUR RIGHTS OF ONE ANOTHER, AND TOWARD THE WOMBS THAT BARE YOU. Duty to God and duty to kinship are named in one clause, and the verse has just grounded all human relationship in descent from a single soul.
Elsewhere the Qur'an uses a formula rather than the word: JOINING WHAT GOD HAS COMMANDED TO BE JOINED, and its opposite, SEVERING it. 13:21 gives the positive and 13:25 the negative; 2:27 says the same, and is not rendered here.
What that formula refers to is not stated in those verses - and 47:22 is the one place it is: WOULD YE THEN WORK CORRUPTION IN THE LAND AND SEVER YOUR TIES OF KINSHIP? That verse fixes the meaning of the others.
Note the company kinship keeps in both triads. 13:25 and 2:27 list breaking a ratified covenant, severing what should be joined, and spreading corruption - as one syndrome. 47:22 pairs corruption in the land directly with severing kin. The text treats family rupture and social ruin as the same kind of failure.
17:26 makes it a matter of DUE rather than of feeling: GIVE THE KINSMAN HIS DUE - the word is the one used of a debt or a right - and kin are named first, before the needy and the traveller.
And 23:101 supplies the limit: when the trumpet is blown THERE WILL BE NO KINSHIP AMONG THEM THAT DAY. The ties are obligatory now and do not carry over.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 4:1, widening across 6 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

The translators word this verse differently
If you fear you cannot act fairly towards the orphans-then marry the women you like-two, or three, or four. But if you fear you will not be fair, then one, or what you already have. That makes it more likely that you avoid bias.
And if ye fear that ye will not deal fairly by the orphans, marry of the women, who seem good to you, two or three or four; and if ye fear that ye cannot do justice (to so many) then one (only) or (the captives) that your right hands possess. Thus it is more likely that ye will not do injustice
But if ye fear that ye cannot do justice between orphans, then marry what seems good to you of women, by twos, or threes, or fours; and if ye fear that ye cannot be equitable, then only one, or what your right hands possess. That keeps you nearer to not being partial
And if ye are apprehensive that ye shall not deal fairly with orphans, then, of other women who seem good in your eyes, marry but two, or three, or four; and if ye still fear that ye shall not act equitably, then one only; or the slaves whom ye have acquired: this will make justice on your part easier
And if ye fear that ye shall not act with equity towards orphans of the female sex, take in marriage of such other women as please you, two, or three, or four, and not more. But if ye fear that ye cannot act equitably towards so many, marry one only, or the slaves which ye shall have acquired. This will be easier, that ye swerve not from righteousness

47:23 Isaan sun warra Rabbiin isaan abaaree gurra isaaniis duuchee ijoowwan isaanii jaamseedha.

Those who believe say, "If only a chapter is sent down." Yet when a decisive chapter is sent down, and fighting is mentioned in it, you see those in whose hearts is sickness looking at you with the look of someone fainting at death. So woe to them!

Obedience and upright speech. Then, when the matter is settled, being true to God would have been better for them.
Obedience and a civil word. Then, when the matter is determined, if they are loyal to Allah it will be well for them
Preferable for them were obedience and a reasonable speech! But when the matter is determined on, then if they believed God it were better for them
And if, when the command for war is issued, they are true to God, it will be assuredly best for them

Those who reverted after the guidance became clear to them-Satan has enticed them, and has given them latitude.
Lo! those who turn back after the guidance hath been manifested unto them, Satan hath seduced them, and He giveth them the rein
Verily, those who turn their backs after the guidance that has been manifested to them - Satan induces them, but (God) lets them go on for a time
But as to those who return to their errors after "the guidance" hath been made plain to them, Satan shall beguile them, and fill them with his suggestions
Verily they who turn their backs, after the true direction is made manifest unto them; Satan shall prepare their wickedness for them, and God shall bear with them for a time

But those whose scales are light-those are they who have lost their souls; in Hell they will dwell forever.
And those whose scales are light are those who lose their souls, in hell abiding
But he whose scales are light,- these are they who lose themselves, in hell to dwell for aye
But they whose balances shall be light, - these are they who shall lose their souls, abiding in hell for ever
but they whose balances shall be light are those who shall lose their souls, and shall remain in hell for ever
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it5 of the 6 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 4:1, 13:21, 13:25, 47:22-23, 17:26, 23:101, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - sever + that + which + god + hath + commanded + should + be + joined; join + that + which + god + hath + commanded; ties + of + kinship; be + careful + of + your + duty + toward + the + wombs + that + bare + you; give + the + kinsman + his + due. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 1 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 30:38 - near-identical to 17:26; carried by the study Are God's 'hand' and 'face' in the Qur'an literal or figurative?
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.

A dashed outline marks a tag the editors handle with extra care. It describes how this study is filed and shown, not what the verses say.
