What does the Qur'an mean that no soul is burdened beyond what it can bear?

Key findingsEditorial

One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.

  1. 01 2:286 GOD TASKETH NOT A SOUL BEYOND ITS SCOPE. For it (is only) that which it hath earned, and against it (only) that which it hath deserved. Our Lord, condemn us not if we forget or miss the mark; our Lord, LAY NOT ON US SUCH A BURDEN AS THOU DIDST LAY ON THOSE BEFORE US. In because it states the principle and then, in the same verse, prays against burdens - which is the tension worth showing.
  2. 02 23:62 And We task not any soul beyond its scope, AND WITH US IS A RECORD WHICH SPEAKETH THE TRUTH, and they will not be wronged. In because it joins the principle to the record, so that the limit on the burden and the accuracy of the account are one claim.
  3. 03 6:152 Give full measure and full weight in justice - WE TASK NOT ANY SOUL BEYOND ITS SCOPE - and if ye give your word, do justice thereunto. In because the clause appears in the middle of a set of practical commands, which shows it functioning as a qualification on obligation rather than as consolation about suffering.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation

Written by the editors. Not a translation, and not a source. It is an editorial restatement of the verses in this study and carries their name because someone has to answer for it.

Three verses carry the phrase, and the context of the third changes what most readers think it means.

The sentence is usually met as consolation in suffering: God does not burden a soul beyond what it can bear, said to someone in difficulty.

6:152 shows it doing a different job. There it sits in the middle of a run of practical commands - do not approach the orphan's property except for good, give full measure and weight, speak justly even about a kinsman, fulfil your covenant - and the clause WE TASK NOT ANY SOUL BEYOND ITS SCOPE is inserted among them. In that setting it is a qualification on OBLIGATION: the commands just given are within reach. It is about what may be required of you, not about what may happen to you.

23:62 points the same way by pairing the principle with the record that SPEAKETH THE TRUTH - the limit on the burden and the accuracy of the reckoning as one claim about fairness.

2:286 is the fullest and the most interesting, because it does not stop at the principle. Having stated that God tasks no soul beyond its scope, the same verse goes on to pray: condemn us not if we forget or err; LAY NOT ON US SUCH A BURDEN AS THOU DIDST LAY ON THOSE BEFORE US; impose not on us that which we have not the strength to bear. The verse asserts the limit and then asks for it - which is either a tension or a form of the assertion, and the text does not say which.

A reader in hardship is not wrong to take comfort from the sentence. They should know that its clearest contextual use is about duties, and that the verse it comes from ends in a petition rather than a reassurance.

not a scholar — what this signature means

I am not a scholar, and nothing here asks you to treat me as one. The plain words on this site are my restatement of what the five translations shown above say, together with counts derived from the text itself — nothing more. I sign them so that a named person is accountable for every sentence, not so you'll take my word for anything. The authority on this page is the text and its translators. If my words don't match theirs, mine are the ones that are wrong.

Scope of this study

This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.

What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.

What this rests on

Opens with 2:286, widening across 3 passages in all.

Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

The versesSource fact 3 passages, each with every cleared translation

3 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.

Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

God does not burden any soul beyond its capacity. To its credit is what it earns, and against it is what it commits. "Our Lord, do not condemn us if we forget or make a mistake. Our Lord, do not burden us as You have burdened those before us. Our Lord, do not burden us with more than we have strength to bear; and pardon us, and forgive us, and have mercy on us. You are our Lord and Master, so help us against the disbelieving people."

Allah tasketh not a soul beyond its scope. For it (is only) that which it hath earned, and against it (only) that which it hath deserved. Our Lord! Condemn us not if we forget, or miss the mark! Our Lord! Lay not on us such a burden as thou didst lay on those before us! Our Lord! Impose not on us that which we have not the strength to bear! Pardon us, absolve us and have mercy on us, Thou, our Protector, and give us victory over the disbelieving folk

Edward Henry Palmer published 1880

God will not require of the soul save its capacity. It shall have what it has earned, and it shall owe what has been earned from it. Lord, catch us not up, if we forget or make mistake; Lord, load us not with a burden, as Thou hast loaded those who were before us. Lord, make us not to carry what we have not strength for, but forgive us, and pardon us, and have mercy on us. Thou art our Sovereign, then help us against the people who do not believe

John Medows Rodwell published 1861

God will not burden any soul beyond its power. It shall enjoy the good which it hath acquired, and shall bear the evil for the acquirement of which it laboured. O our Lord! punish us not if we forget, or fall into sin; O our Lord! and lay not on us a load like that which thou hast laid on those who have been before us; O our Lord! and lay not on us that for which we have not strength: but blot out our sins and forgive us, and have pity on us. Thou art our protector: give us victory therefore over the infidel nations

George Sale published 1734

God will not force any soul beyond its capacity: It shall have the good which it gaineth, and it shall suffer the evil which it gaineth. O Lord punisth us not, if we forget, or act sinfully: O Lord lay not on us a burden like that which thou hast laid on those who have been before us; neither make us, O Lord, to bear what we have not strength to bear, but be favourable unto us, and spare us, and be merciful unto us. Thou art our patron, help us therefore against the unbelieving nations

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.

Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 2:286, 23:62, 6:152, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.

How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - burdened + beyond; task + not + soul + beyond; obligeth + not; scope; capacity; bear + not + beyond. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.

What was returned and not carried. 2 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 35:13 - carried by the studies What does the Qur'an say about night and day 'wrapping' each other? and What does the Qur'an say about the sun, the moon, and their orbits - and does it name a centre?; 39:5 - carried by What does the Qur'an say about night and day 'wrapping' each other?, where it is the central verse.

Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.

tafsir

Commentary on the Qur'an: the works in which scholars interpret and explain its verses.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. The platform's scope statement names it as "interpretation (tafsir)".

hadith

A report that claims to preserve something the Prophet Muhammad said or did.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. It follows the platform's standing distinction: the sunnah is the practice, and a hadith is a report claiming to preserve it.

asbab al-nuzul

Accounts of the circumstances in which particular verses of the Qur'an are reported to have been revealed ("occasion of revelation").

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. "Occasion of revelation", in the singular, is the wording the platform's studies use when they say what they rest on.
