Whoever comes up with a good deed will have ten times its like; and whoever comes up with an evil deed will be repaid only with its equivalent-they will not be wronged.
Does the Qur'an count a bad deed once but multiply a good one?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 6:160 WHOSO BRINGETH A GOOD DEED WILL RECEIVE TENFOLD THE LIKE THEREOF, WHILE WHOSO BRINGETH AN ILL-DEED WILL BE AWARDED BUT THE LIKE THEREOF; AND THEY WILL NOT BE WRONGED. In because it is the answer to the question in a single verse, both halves stated together, and the closing clause names the asymmetry as fairness rather than as leniency.
- 02 40:40 WHOSO DOETH AN ILL-DEED, HE WILL BE REPAID THE LIKE THEREOF; while whoso doeth right, whether male or female, and is a believer, (all) such will enter the Garden, WHERE THEY WILL BE NOURISHED WITHOUT STINT. In because it repeats the asymmetry with the second half unbounded rather than tenfold, and because it names men and women in the same clause.
- 03 28:84 Whoso bringeth a good deed, FOR HIM THERE WILL BE BETTER THEREOF; while as for him who bringeth an ill-deed, those who do ill-deeds will not be requited save what they did. In because it gives a third formulation - BETTER, rather than a multiple - and repeats the exact limit on the ill-deed.
- 04 4:40 Lo, GOD WRONGETH NOT EVEN OF THE WEIGHT OF AN ANT; AND IF THERE IS A GOOD DEED, HE WILL DOUBLE IT AND WILL GIVE (THE DOER) FROM HIS PRESENCE AN IMMENSE REWARD. In because it states the principle behind the arrangement - no wronging by the smallest unit - and then adds the doubling on top of it.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Yes, and 6:160 says it in one sentence with both halves side by side.
WHOSO BRINGETH A GOOD DEED WILL RECEIVE TENFOLD THE LIKE THEREOF, WHILE WHOSO BRINGETH AN ILL-DEED WILL BE AWARDED BUT THE LIKE THEREOF.
The good is multiplied by ten. The bad is repaid exactly once. And then the clause that tells you how the text understands this: AND THEY WILL NOT BE WRONGED.
That is the key to the whole subject. The asymmetry is not presented as mercy overriding justice. It is presented as the arrangement under which nobody is wronged - because the limit on the ill-deed is what protects a person, and the multiplication of the good is a gift on top.
The formulation varies. 6:160 says tenfold. 28:84 says BETTER THEREOF, without a number. 40:40 says the good-doer will be NOURISHED WITHOUT STINT - unbounded. But the second half is identical every time: the ill-deed is requited with THE LIKE THEREOF, and no more. Three verses, three descriptions of the reward, one fixed limit on the punishment.
4:40 supplies the principle underneath: GOD WRONGETH NOT EVEN OF THE WEIGHT OF AN ANT - and then, in the same verse, the doubling of a good deed and an immense reward besides.
The related studies are Does the Qur'an say a good deed is multiplied ten times over?, which carries the number, and multiplication, which carries the open-ended increase. The study What does the Qur'an say about wealth and giving - and does any verse name a rate? and the study What does the Qur'an say about charity multiplied - the grain that grows seven ears of a hundred? carry the seven-hundredfold case for spending.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 6:160, widening across 4 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 4 passages, each with every cleared translation
4 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Are they waiting for anything but for the angels to come to them, or for your Lord to arrive, or for some of your Lord's signs to come? On the Day when some of your Lord's signs come, no soul will benefit from its faith unless it had believed previously, or had earned goodness through its faith. Say, "Wait, we too are waiting."
Wait they, indeed, for nothing less than that the angels should come unto them, or thy Lord should come, or there should come one of the portents from thy Lord? In the day when one of the portents from thy Lord cometh, its belief availeth naught a soul which theretofore believed not, nor in its belief earned good (by works). Say: Wait ye! Lo! We (too) are waiting
What do they expect but that the angels should come for them, or that thy Lord should come, or that some signs of thy Lord should come? On the day when some signs do come, its faith shall profit no soul which did not believe before, unless it has earned some good by its faith. Say, 'Wait ye expectant, then we wait expectant too

Do they wait for any other than that the angels should come unto them, to part their souls from their bodies; or that thy Lord should come to punish them; or that some of the signs of thy Lord should come to pass, shewing the day of judgement to be at hand? Then how will it be, when We bring a witness from every community, and We bring you as a witness against these?
But how (will it be with them) when We bring of every people a witness, and We bring thee (O Muhammad) a witness against these
How then when we bring from every nation a witness, and bring thee as a witness against these
How! when we shall bring up against them witnesses from all peoples, and when we shall bring thee up as witness against these
How will it be with the unbelievers, when we shall bring a witness out of each nation against itself, and shall bring thee, O Mohammed, a witness against these people

On that Day, those who disbelieved and disobeyed the Messenger will wish that the earth were leveled over them. They will conceal nothing from God.
On that day those who disbelieved and disobeyed the messenger will wish that they were level with the ground, and they can hide no fact from Allah
on the day when those who misbelieve and rebel against the Apostle would fain that the earth were levelled with them? but they cannot hide the news from God
On that day they who were Infidels and rebelled against the prophet, shall wish that the earth were levelled with them! But nothing shall they hide from God
In that day they who have not believed, and have rebelled against the apostle of God, shall wish the earth was levelled with them; and they shall not be able to hide any matter from God
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it3 of the 4 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 6:160, 40:40, 28:84, 4:40, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - whoso + bringeth + a + good + deed + will + receive + tenfold; ill-deed + will + be + awarded + but + the + like + thereof; is + repaid + only + the + like + thereof. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.

A dashed outline marks a tag the editors handle with extra care. It describes how this study is filed and shown, not what the verses say.
