Those who insult God and His Messenger, God has cursed them in this life and in the Hereafter, and has prepared for them a demeaning punishment.
What does the Qur'an say about those who mocked or harmed the Prophet - and what penalty does it not prescribe?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 33:57–58 Lo, THOSE WHO MALIGN GOD AND HIS MESSENGER, God hath cursed them in the world and the Hereafter... And those who MALIGN BELIEVING MEN AND BELIEVING WOMEN UNDESERVEDLY, they bear the guilt of slander and manifest sin. In as ONE PASSAGE because the second verse extends the same protection to ordinary believers, and reading 33:57 alone makes it look like a privilege. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about backbiting and slander?, with a different reason there.
- 02 9:61 And of them are those who VEX THE PROPHET AND SAY: HE IS ONLY A HEARER. Say: a hearer of good for you, who believeth in God and is true to the believers, and a mercy for such of you as believe. In because the insult is quoted and the reply turns it into a description - he does listen, and that is to your benefit.
- 03 108:1–3 Lo, We have given thee Abundance; so pray unto thy Lord, and sacrifice. LO, IT IS THY DETRACTOR WHO IS WITHOUT POSTERITY. In because it is the shortest surah in the Qur'an and it answers a personal taunt, returning it.
- 04 5:41 O Messenger, LET NOT THEM GRIEVE THEE who vie one with another in the race to disbelief. This verse tells the Messenger not to let those who race to disbelief grieve him; the instruction concerns his distress, and it gives no instruction to punish anyone.
- 05 15:94–97 So proclaim that which thou art commanded, and withdraw from the idolaters. LO, WE DEFEND THEE FROM THE SCOFFERS... And well We know that thy bosom is at times oppressed by what they say. In as ONE PASSAGE because the promise of defence and the acknowledgement of the hurt are consecutive.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Five passages, and the striking feature is how much of the response is about the Prophet's feelings rather than about punishment.
15:97 says it plainly: WE KNOW THAT THY BOSOM IS AT TIMES OPPRESSED BY WHAT THEY SAY. The verse before it promises defence from the scoffers; the verse itself concedes that the words land.
5:41 is an instruction not to grieve. 9:61 quotes an actual insult - HE IS ONLY A HEARER, meaning a credulous man who listens to anyone - and answers it by accepting the description and reversing its value: a hearer of good for you.
108 is the sharpest. It is three verses, the shortest surah in the book, and it answers a personal taunt: LO, IT IS THY DETRACTOR WHO IS WITHOUT POSTERITY. The word all four translators wrestle with is a jibe about being cut off, childless, without a future - and the surah returns it.
33:57 does threaten those who malign God and His messenger with a curse in this world and the next. It must be read with 33:58, which is the very next verse and extends the same protection to ORDINARY BELIEVING MEN AND WOMEN maligned undeservedly. The text does not reserve the protection for the Prophet.
What is absent is any instruction to the community to punish. No verse here prescribes a penalty for insulting the Prophet, and the responses given are proclamation, withdrawal, a promise of divine defence, and a retort. Whatever later law developed on this, it is not in these verses, and no work of law has cleared the rights audit.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 33:57–58, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 5 passages, each with every cleared translation
5 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

There are some of them who injure the Prophet and say, "He is all ear." Say: An ear of good to you! He believeth in God, and believeth the believers: and is a mercy to such of you as believe: But they who injure the Apostle of God, shall suffer a dolorous chastisement

O Messenger! Do not let those who are quick to disbelief grieve you-from among those who say with their mouths, "We believe," but their hearts do not believe; and from among the Jews-listeners to lies, listeners to other people who did not come to you. They distort words from their places, and they say, "If you are given this, accept it; but if you are not given it, beware." Whomever God has willed to divert, you have nothing for him from God. Those are they whose hearts God does not intend to purify. For them is disgrace in this world, and for them is a great punishment in the Hereafter.

O Messenger! Let not them grieve thee who vie one with another in the race to disbelief, of such as say with their mouths: "We believe," but their hearts believe not, and of the Jews: listeners for the sake of falsehood, listeners on behalf of other folk who come not unto thee, changing words from their context and saying: If this be given unto you, receive it, but if this be not given unto you, then beware! He whom Allah doometh unto sin, thou (by thine efforts) wilt avail him naught against Allah. Those are they for whom the Will of Allah is that He cleanse not their hearts. Theirs in the world will be ignominy, and in the Hereafter an awful doom
O thou Apostle! let not those grieve thee who vie in misbelief; or those who say with their mouths 'We believe,' but their hearts do not believe; or of those who are Jews, listeners to a lie, - listeners to other people, but who come not to thee. They pervert the words from their places and say, ' If this is what ye are given, take it; but if ye are not given it, then beware!' but he whom God wishes to mislead, thou canst do nothing with God for him; these are those whose hearts God wishes not to purify, for them in this world is disgrace, and for them in the next is mighty woe
O Apostle! let not those who vie with one another in speeding to infidelity vex thee; - of those who say with their mouths, "We believe," but whose hearts believe not; - or of the Jews listeners to a lie-listeners to others - but who come not to thee. They shift the words of the law from their places, and say, "If this be brought to you, receive it; but if this be not brought to you, then beware of it." For him whom God would mislead, thou canst in no wise prevail with God! They whose hearts God shall not please to cleanse, shall suffer disgrace in this world, and in the next a grievous punishment
O apostle, let not them grieve thee, who hasten to infidelity, either of those who say, we believe, with their mouths, but whose hearts believe not; or of the Jews, who hearken to a lie, and hearken to other people; who come not unto thee: They pervert the words of the law from their true places, and say, if this be brought unto you, receive it; but if it be not brought unto you, beware of receiving ought else; and in behalf of him whom God shall resolve to seduce , thou shalt not prevail with God at all. They whose hearts God shall not please to cleanse, shall suffer shame in this world, and a grievous punishment in the next

- Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

Ewe Mtume!

Listeners to falsehoods, eaters of illicit earnings. If they come to you, judge between them, or turn away from them. If you turn away from them, they will not harm you in the least. But if you judge, judge between them equitably. God loves the equitable.
Listeners for the sake of falsehood! Greedy for illicit gain! If then they have recourse unto thee (Muhammad) judge between them or disclaim jurisdiction. If thou disclaimest jurisdiction, then they cannot harm thee at all. But if thou judgest, judge between them with equity. Lo! Allah loveth the equitable
listeners to a lie, eaters of unlawful things! But if they come to thee, then judge between them or turn aside from them; but if thou turnest aside from them they shall not harm thee at all, but if thou judgest, then judge between them with justice, verily, God loves the just
Listeners to a falsehood and greedy devourers of the forbidden! If, therefore, they have recourse to thee, then judge between them, or withdraw from them. If thou withdraw from them, then can they have no power to injure thee. But if thou judge, then judge between them with equity. Verily, God loveth those who deal equitably
Who hearken to a lie, and eat that which is forbidden. But if they come unto thee for judgment, either judge between them, or leave them; and if thou leave them, they shall not hurt thee at all. But if thou undertake to judge, judge between them with equity; for God loveth those who observe justice

But why do they come to you for judgment, when they have the Torah, in which is God's Law? Yet they turn away after that. These are not believers.
How come they unto thee for judgment when they have the Torah, wherein Allah hath delivered judgment (for them)? Yet even after that they turn away. Such (folk) are not believers
But how should they make thee their judge, when they have the law wherein is God's judgment? Yet they turn back after that, for they do not believe
But how shall they make thee their judge, since they possess already the Law, in which are the behests of God, and have not obeyed it? After this, they will turn their backs; but such are not believers
And how will they submit to thy decision, since they have the law, containing the judgment of God? Then will they turn their backs, after this; but those are not true believers

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it6 of the 7 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 33:57-58, 9:61, 108:1-3, 5:41, 15:94-97, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - malign + god + and + his + messenger; those + who + annoy + the + prophet; vex + the + messenger; thy + detractor + who + will + be + cut + off; mock + at + the + messengers. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 2 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 4:102 - the fear-prayer, taken up by the study What does the Qur'an say about praying in fear or in battle?; 40:83 - about earlier peoples.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
Correction record, 2026-09-17. At 5:41, the reason said another study carries this verse, which it does not; the cross-reference was removed. The verses shown and their translations are unchanged.
