Say, "O My devotees who have believed, keep your duty to your Lord. For those who do good in this world, is goodness. And God's earth is vast. The steadfast will be paid their wages in full, without reckoning."
What does the Qur'an mean by a reward 'without measure' (bi-ghayri hisab)?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 39:10 Say: O My bondmen who believe, observe your duty to your Lord. For those who do good in this world there is good, and God's earth is spacious. VERILY THE STEADFAST WILL BE PAID THEIR WAGES WITHOUT STINT. In because it is the verse the phrase is best known from, and because the people it is promised to are the STEADFAST specifically. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an promise the patient - a reward 'in full, without account'?, with a different reason there.
- 02 2:212 Beautified is the life of the world for those who disbelieve; they make a jest of the believers. But those who keep their duty to God will be above them on the Day of Resurrection. GOD GIVETH WITHOUT STINT TO WHOM HE WILL. In because it attaches the same phrase to God's giving in general rather than to a reward earned, which is the other and commoner use.
- 03 3:37 Whenever Zachariah went into the sanctuary where she was, he found that she had food. He said: O Mary, whence cometh unto thee this food? She answered: it is from God. GOD GIVETH WITHOUT STINT TO WHOM HE WILL. In because it is the phrase in a narrative, spoken by a woman about food that had appeared - the most concrete instance in the text. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about provision (rizq) coming from God? and the study What does the Qur'an say about Mary (Maryam)?, with different reasons there.
- 04 40:40 Whoso doeth right, whether male or female, and is a believer, all such will enter the Garden, WHERE THEY WILL BE NOURISHED WITHOUT STINT. In because it applies the phrase to the provision in the Garden and names men and women in the same clause. ALSO CARRIED by Does the Qur'an count a bad deed once but multiply a good one?, with a different reason there.
- 05 38:39 This is Our gift, so bestow thou, OR WITHHOLD, WITHOUT RECKONING. In because the same phrase is applied to a human being - Solomon, given discretion over a gift without having to account for it - which is the one place it is not about God.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The phrase means what it says, and the Qur'an uses it in three different ways.
Most often it describes GOD'S GIVING, not a reward earned. 2:212 and 3:27: GOD GIVETH WITHOUT STINT TO WHOM HE WILL. The clause is about the giver's unconstrained hand, and it is usually attached to whom He will - so it is a statement about discretion as much as about quantity.
3:37 is the most concrete instance and it is a story. Zachariah keeps finding food with Mary and asks where it comes from. She answers: IT IS FROM GOD - GOD GIVETH WITHOUT STINT TO WHOM HE WILL. The phrase arrives as an ordinary explanation of an ordinary meal that had no visible source.
Then the reward sense. 39:10 is the verse the question is drawn from, and its condition is specific: THE STEADFAST WILL BE PAID THEIR WAGES WITHOUT STINT. Not everyone - those who endured. 40:40 uses it of the provision in the Garden rather than of the wage.
And 38:39 uses the same words of a human being. Solomon is given his kingdom and told: THIS IS OUR GIFT, SO BESTOW THOU, OR WITHHOLD, WITHOUT RECKONING. There the phrase means exempt from having to account for it.
So across the set the expression carries two ideas that the English renderings pull apart: without limit, and without being counted. The translators divide between without stint, without measure, and without reckoning.
Whether the promise to the steadfast means unlimited in amount or unaudited in manner is not settled by the text, and this study does not settle it.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 39:10, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

When some adversity touches the human being, he prays to his Lord, repenting to Him. But then, when He confers on him a grace of His, he forgets what he was praying for before, and he attributes rivals to God, in order to lead astray from His way. Say, "Enjoy your disbelief for a little while; you will be among the inmates of the Fire."

Are they waiting for God Himself to come to them in the shadows of the clouds, together with the angels, and thus the matter is settled? All things are returned to God.
Wait they for naught else than that Allah should come unto them in the shadows of the clouds with the angels? Then the case would be already judged. All cases go back to Allah (for judgment)
What can they expect but that God should come unto them in the shadow of a cloud, and the angels too? But the thing is decreed, and unto God do things return
What can such expect but that God should come down to them overshadowed with clouds, and the angels also, and their doom be sealed? And to God shall all things return

Humanity used to be one community; then God sent the prophets, bringing good news and giving warnings. And He sent down with them the Scripture, with the truth, to judge between people regarding their differences. But none differed over it except those who were given it-after the proofs had come to them-out of mutual envy between them. Then God guided those who believed to the truth they had disputed, in accordance with His will. God guides whom He wills to a straight path.
Mankind were one community, and Allah sent (unto them) prophets as bearers of good tidings and as warners, and revealed therewith the Scripture with the truth that it might judge between mankind concerning that wherein they differed. Or do you expect to enter Paradise before the example of those who came before you had reached you? Adversity and hardship had afflicted them, and they were so shaken up, that the Messenger and those who believed with him said, "When is God's victory?" Indeed, God's victory is near.
Or think ye that ye will enter paradise while yet there hath not come unto you the like of (that which came to) those who passed away before you? Now surely Allah's help is nigh
Did ye count to enter Paradise, while there had nothing come to you like those who passed away before you; there touched them violence and harm, and they were made to quake, until the Apostle and those who believed with him said, 'When (comes) God's help? Is not God's help then surely nigh
Think ye to enter Paradise, when no such things have come upon you, as on those who flourish before you? Ills and troubles tried them; and so tossed were they by trials, that the Apostle and they who shared his faith, said, "When will the help of God come?" - Is not the help of God nigh

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it6 of the 7 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 39:10, 2:212, 3:37, 40:40, 38:39, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - without + stint; without + measure; without + reckoning; giveth + sustenance + to + whom + he + will + without. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 2 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 3:27 - near-identical to 2:212 and 3:37, both kept; 24:38 - on-topic and close.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
Correction record, 2026-09-17. In the answer, a claim about the meaning of the Arabic word at 39:10 was removed, because no source a reader can check is given for it. The verses shown and their translations are unchanged.
