Those who give in prosperity and adversity, and those who restrain anger, and those who forgive people. God loves the doers of good.
What does the Qur'an say about spending in ease and in hardship?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 3:134 THOSE WHO SPEND OF THAT WHICH GOD HATH GIVEN THEM IN EASE AND IN ADVERSITY, those who control their wrath and are forgiving toward mankind - God loveth the good. The question is drawn from this verse, which names spending in ease and in adversity first among the marks of those God loves, with controlling wrath and forgiving others. It also appears in What does the Qur'an say about controlling anger?, for a different reason.
- 02 65:7 LET HIM WHO HATH ABUNDANCE SPEND OF HIS ABUNDANCE, AND HE WHOSE PROVISION IS MEASURED, LET HIM SPEND OF THAT WHICH GOD HATH GIVEN HIM. GOD ASKETH NAUGHT OF ANY SOUL SAVE THAT WHICH HE HATH GIVEN IT. God will vouchsafe, after hardship, ease. In because it scales the obligation to means and then states the principle that no one is asked beyond what they hold.
- 03 2:215 They ask thee what they shall spend. Say: THAT WHICH YE SPEND FOR GOOD MUST GO TO PARENTS AND NEAR KINDRED AND ORPHANS AND THE NEEDY AND THE WAYFARER. In because the question asked is HOW MUCH and the answer given is TO WHOM. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about caring for the poor and the orphan?, with a different reason there.
- 04 2:219 And they ask thee what they ought to spend. Say: THAT WHICH IS SUPERFLUOUS. In because it is the only place the text answers the quantity question at all, and the answer is a relative term rather than a fraction.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Four verses, and between them they do something unusual: they scale a religious obligation to a person's actual circumstances.
3:134 lists giving IN EASE AND IN ADVERSITY as the first mark of the people God loves - before controlling anger and before pardoning. Giving when it is difficult is named, not assumed away.
65:7 is the verse that makes this workable. LET HIM WHO HAS ABUNDANCE SPEND OF HIS ABUNDANCE - and HE WHOSE PROVISION IS MEASURED, let him spend of what God has given him. Two different standards for two different situations. And then the principle underneath: GOD ASKS NOTHING OF ANY SOUL SAVE WHAT HE HAS GIVEN IT. The obligation cannot exceed the means, by construction.
The verse ends with a promise that is also a description: God will grant, after hardship, ease. A related promise, at 94:5-6, is the subject of the study What does the Qur'an mean that "with hardship comes ease"?
2:215 and 2:219 are both answers to the same question - WHAT SHALL WE SPEND - asked twice. 2:215 answers with a list of PEOPLE rather than a sum: parents, near kindred, orphans, the needy, the wayfarer. 2:219 gives the only quantitative answer in the Qur'an, and it is not a number: THAT WHICH IS SUPERFLUOUS - the surplus, what is beyond need, depending on the rendering.
So the text refuses a fraction twice, gives a recipient list once, scales the duty to means, and caps it at what a person actually has. The obligatory share - zakat, with a rate - is taken up by the study How much charity does the Qur'an require (zakat)? and is not answered here.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 3:134, widening across 4 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

Allow them to reside where you reside, according to your means, and do not harass them in order to make things difficult for them. If they are pregnant, spend on them until they give birth. And if they nurse your infant, give them their payment. And conduct your relation in amity. But if you disagree, then let another woman nurse him.
Lodge them where ye dwell, according to your wealth, and harass them not so as to straiten life for them. And if they are with child, then spend for them till they bring forth their burden. Then, if they give suck for you, give them their due payment and consult together in kindness; but if ye make difficulties for one another, then let some other woman give suck for him (the father of the child)
Let them dwell where ye dwell, according to your means, and do not harm them, to reduce them to straits; and if they be heavy with child, then pay for them until they lay down their burdens; and if they suckle (the child) for you, then give them their hire, and consult among yourselves in reason; but if ye be in difficulties, and another woman shall suckle the child for him
Lodge the divorced wherever ye lodge, according to your means; and distress them not by putting them to straits. And if they are pregnant, then be at charges for the them till they are delivered of their burden; and if they suckle your children, then pay them their hire and consult among yourselves, and act generously: And if herin ye meet with obstacles, then let another female suckle for him
Suffer the women whom ye divorce to dwell in some part of the houses wherein ye dwell; according to the room and conveniences of the habitations which ye possess: And make them not uneasy, that ye may reduce them to straits. And if they be with child, expend on them what shall be needful, until they be delivered of their burden. And if they suckle their children for you, give them their hire; and consult among yourselves, according to what shall be just and reasonable. And if ye be put to a difficulty herein, and another woman shall suckle the child for him

Humanity used to be one community; then God sent the prophets, bringing good news and giving warnings. And He sent down with them the Scripture, with the truth, to judge between people regarding their differences. But none differed over it except those who were given it-after the proofs had come to them-out of mutual envy between them. Then God guided those who believed to the truth they had disputed, in accordance with His will. God guides whom He wills to a straight path.

They ask you about fighting during the Holy Month. Say, "Fighting during it is deplorable; but to bar others from God's path, and to disbelieve in Him, and to prevent access to the Holy Mosque, and to expel its people from it, are more deplorable with God. And persecution is more serious than killing. They will not cease to fight you until they turn you back from your religion, if they can. Whoever among you turns back from his religion, and dies a disbeliever-those are they whose works will come to nothing, in this life, and in the Hereafter. And whoso becometh a renegade and dieth in his disbelief: such are they whose works have fallen both in the world and the Hereafter. Such are rightful owners of the Fire: they will abide therein
They will ask thee of the sacred month,- of fighting therein. Say, 'Fighting therein is a great sin; but turning folks off God's way, and misbelief in Him and in the Sacred Mosque, and turning His people out therefrom, is a greater in God's sight; and sedition is a greater sin than slaughter.' They will not cease from fighting you until they turn you from your religion if they can; but whosoever of you is turned from his religion and dies while still a misbeliever; these are those whose works are vain in this world and the next; they are the fellows of the Fire, and they shall dwell therein for aye
They will ask thee concerning war in the Sacred Month. SAY: To war therein is bad, but to turn aside from the cause of God, and to have no faith in Him, and in the Sacred Temple, and to drive out its people, is worse in the sight of God; and civil strife is worse than bloodshed. They will not cease to war against you until they turn you from your religion, if they be able: but whoever of you shall turn from his religion and die an infidel, their works shall be fruitless in this world, and in the next: they shall be consigned to the fire; therein to abide for aye
They will ask thee concerning the sacred month, whether they may war therein: Answer, to war therein is grievous; but to obstruct the way of God, and infidelity towards him, and to keep men from the holy temple, and to drive out his people from thence, is more grievous in the sight of God, and the temptation to idolatry is more grievous than to kill in the sacred months. They will not cease to war against you, until they turn you from your religion, if they be able: But whoever among you shall turn back from his religion, and die an infidel, their works shall be vain in this world, and the next; they shall be the companions of hell fire, they shall remain therein for ever

Do not marry idolatresses, unless they have believed. A believing maid is better than an idolatress, even if you like her. And do not marry idolaters, unless they have believed. Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 3:134, 65:7, 2:215, 2:219, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - spend + in + ease + in + adversity; spend + prosperity + adversity; let + him + who + hath + abundance + spend; straitened + spend + of + that + which + god + hath + given. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
Correction record, 2026-09-17. At 3:134, the reason named a study that does not carry the verse; it now names only the one that does. The verses shown and their translations are unchanged.

A dashed outline marks a tag the editors handle with extra care. It describes how this study is filed and shown, not what the verses say.
