What does the Qur'an say about a woman's right to own and to earn?

Key findingsEditorial

One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.

  1. 01 4:32 And covet not the thing in which God hath made some of you excel others. UNTO MEN A FORTUNE FROM THAT WHICH THEY HAVE EARNED, AND UNTO WOMEN A FORTUNE FROM THAT WHICH THEY HAVE EARNED. And ask God of His bounty. In because it states earning symmetrically in one clause, and because it is the clearest statement in the Qur'an that a woman's earnings are her own. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about envy?, with a different reason there.
  2. 02 4:4 AND GIVE UNTO THE WOMEN FREE GIFT OF THEIR MARRIAGE PORTIONS; BUT IF THEY OF THEIR OWN ACCORD REMIT UNTO YOU A PART THEREOF, then ye are welcome to absorb it. In because the payment is made to her and only she may remit it - which is a statement about title. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about the marriage gift (mahr) - and who owns it? and the study What does the Qur'an say about a woman's consent to marriage?, with different reasons there.
  3. 03 4:20–21 And if ye wish to exchange one wife for another and YE HAVE GIVEN UNTO ONE OF THEM A SUM OF MONEY, HOWEVER GREAT, TAKE NOTHING OF IT. Would ye take it by the way of calumny and open wrong? How can ye take it when one of you hath gone in unto the other? In as ONE PASSAGE because it forbids recovering the payment at divorce however large it was, and 4:21 gives the reason.
  4. 04 4:7 Unto the men a share of that which parents and near kindred leave, AND UNTO THE WOMEN A SHARE of that which parents and near kindred leave, whether it be little or much - a legal share. In because it establishes that women hold property by inheritance as of right. ALSO CARRIED by the study What are the Qur'an's inheritance shares for women?, with a different reason there.
  5. 05 4:19 IT IS NOT LAWFUL FOR YOU FORCIBLY TO INHERIT THE WOMEN of your deceased kinsmen, NOR TO PRESS THEM THAT YE MAY TAKE AWAY A PART OF THAT WHICH YE HAVE GIVEN THEM. In because it forbids both treating a woman as property and pressuring her out of hers. ALSO CARRIED by the studies What does the Qur'an say about a woman's consent to marriage? and What are the Qur'an's inheritance shares for women?, with different reasons there.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation

Written by the editors. Not a translation, and not a source. It is an editorial restatement of the verses in this study and carries their name because someone has to answer for it.

4:32 is the verse, and its symmetry is the point: UNTO MEN A FORTUNE FROM THAT WHICH THEY HAVE EARNED, AND UNTO WOMEN A FORTUNE FROM THAT WHICH THEY HAVE EARNED.

The same clause, twice, with the noun changed. Whatever each earns is theirs.

The rest of the material is about protecting property she already holds, and it is unusually specific about the ways it could be taken.

4:4 gives her the marriage payment directly - a free gift of their marriage portions - and provides that only SHE may remit any of it, OF HER OWN ACCORD.

4:20 closes the obvious loophole. A man divorcing to remarry may not take back what he gave, HOWEVER GREAT - and the verse calls the attempt calumny and open wrong.

4:19 closes two more: she may not be inherited as part of an estate, and she may not be PRESSED so that part of what she was given is recovered.

4:7 establishes inheritance in her own name, whether the estate is little or much.

Taken together the text gives a woman title by earning, by gift, and by inheritance, and then forbids four distinct methods of getting it back off her.

What the Qur'an does not do is say anything about the kinds of work a woman may do, or about her working outside the home. Whether women may work or hold office asks what SCHOLARS say, and it is not answered here because this platform holds no cleared fiqh.

not a scholar — what this signature means

I am not a scholar, and nothing here asks you to treat me as one. The plain words on this site are my restatement of what the five translations shown above say, together with counts derived from the text itself — nothing more. I sign them so that a named person is accountable for every sentence, not so you'll take my word for anything. The authority on this page is the text and its translators. If my words don't match theirs, mine are the ones that are wrong.

Scope of this study

This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.

What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.

What this rests on

Opens with 4:32, widening across 5 passages in all.

Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

The versesSource fact 5 passages, each with every cleared translation

5 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.

Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Talal Itani2012 Men are the protectors and maintainers of women, as God has given some of them an advantage over others, and because they spend out of their wealth. The good women are obedient, guarding what God would have them guard. As for those from whom you fear disloyalty, admonish them, and abandon them in their beds, then strike them. But if they obey you, seek no way against them. God is Sublime, Great.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall1930 Men are in charge of women, because Allah hath made the one of them to excel the other, and because they spend of their property (for the support of women). So good women are the obedient, guarding in secret that which Allah hath guarded. As for those from whom ye fear rebellion, admonish them and banish them to beds apart, and scourge them. Then if they obey you, seek not a way against them. Lo! Allah is ever High, Exalted, Great

Edward Henry Palmer1880 Men stand superior to women in that God hath preferred some of them over others, and in that they expend of their wealth: and the virtuous women, devoted, careful (in their husbands') absence, as God has cared for them. But those whose perverseness ye fear, admonish them and remove them into bed-chambers and beat them; but if they submit to you, then do not seek a way against them; verily, God is high and great

John Medows Rodwell1861 Men are superior to women on account of the qualities with which God hath gifted the one above the other, and on account of the outlay they make from their substance for them. Virtuous women are obedient, careful, during the husband's absence, because God hath of them been careful. But chide those for whose refractoriness ye have cause to fear; remove them into beds apart, and scourage them: but if they are obedient to you, then seek not occasion against them: verily, God is High, Great

George Sale1734 Men shall have the pre-eminence above women, because of those advantages wherein God hath caused the one of them to excel the other, and for that which they expend of their substance in maintaining their wives. The honest women are obedient, careful in the absence of their husbands, for that God preserveth them, by committing them to the care and protection of the men. But those, whose perverseness ye shall be apprehensive of, rebuke; and remove them into separate apartments, and chastise them. But if they shall be obedient unto you, seek not an occasion of quarrel against them; for God is high and great

Talal Itani2012 If you fear you cannot act fairly towards the orphans-then marry the women you like-two, or three, or four. But if you fear you will not be fair, then one, or what you already have. That makes it more likely that you avoid bias.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall1930 And if ye fear that ye will not deal fairly by the orphans, marry of the women, who seem good to you, two or three or four; and if ye fear that ye cannot do justice (to so many) then one (only) or (the captives) that your right hands possess. Thus it is more likely that ye will not do injustice

Edward Henry Palmer1880 But if ye fear that ye cannot do justice between orphans, then marry what seems good to you of women, by twos, or threes, or fours; and if ye fear that ye cannot be equitable, then only one, or what your right hands possess. That keeps you nearer to not being partial

John Medows Rodwell1861 And if ye are apprehensive that ye shall not deal fairly with orphans, then, of other women who seem good in your eyes, marry but two, or three, or four; and if ye still fear that ye shall not act equitably, then one only; or the slaves whom ye have acquired: this will make justice on your part easier

George Sale1734 And if ye fear that ye shall not act with equity towards orphans of the female sex, take in marriage of such other women as please you, two, or three, or four, and not more. But if ye fear that ye cannot act equitably towards so many, marry one only, or the slaves which ye shall have acquired. This will be easier, that ye swerve not from righteousness

Talal Itani2012 Test the orphans until they reach the age of marriage. If you find them to be mature enough, hand over their properties to them. And do not consume it extravagantly or hastily before they grow up. The rich shall not charge any wage, but the poor may charge fairly. When you hand over their properties to them, have it witnessed for them. God suffices as a Reckoner.

Mohammed Marmaduke William Pickthall1930 Prove orphans till they reach the marriageable age; then, if ye find them of sound judgment, deliver over unto them their fortune; and devour it not by squandering and in haste lest they should grow up Whoso (of the guardians) is rich, let him abstain generously (from taking of the property of orphans); and whoso is poor let him take thereof in reason (for his guardianship). And when ye deliver up their fortune unto orphans, have (the transaction) witnessed in their presence. Allah sufficeth as a Reckoner

Edward Henry Palmer1880 Prove orphans until they reach a marriageable age, and if ye perceive in them right management, then hand over to them their property, and do not devour it extravagantly in anticipation of their growing up. And he who is rich, let him abstain; but he who is poor, let him devour in reason, and when ye hand over to them their property, then take witnesses against them; but God sufficeth for taking account

John Medows Rodwell1861 And make trial of orphans until they reach the age of marriage; and if ye perceive in them a sound judgment, then hand over their substance to them; but consume ye it not wastefully, or by hastily entrusting it to them; Because they are growing up. And let the rich guardian not even touch it; and let him who is poor use it for his support (eat of it) with discretion. And when ye make over their substance to them, then take witnesses in their presence: God also maketh a sufficient account

George Sale1734 And examine the orphans until they attain the age of marriage: But if ye perceive they are able to manage their affairs well, deliver their substance unto them; and waste it not extravagantly, or hastily, because they grow up. Let him who is rich abstain entirely from the orphans estates; and let him who is poor take thereof according to what shall be reasonable. George Sale1734 O true believers, it is not lawful for you to be heirs of women against their will, nor to hinder them from marrying others, that ye may take away part of what ye have given them in dowry; unless they have been guilty of a manifest crime: But converse kindly with them.

Troende! Det är inte tillåtet för er att ärva kvinnor mot deras vilja. Behandla dem inte illa för att ta tillbaka något av det ni har gett dem, om de inte tydligt har gjort sig skyldiga till otukt. What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it5 of the 6 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page

The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.

Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 4:32, 4:4, 4:20-21, 4:7, 4:19, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.

How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - unto + men + a + fortune + from + that + which + they + have + earned; unto + women + a + fortune; covet + not + the + thing + in + which + god + hath + made + some + of + you + excel; give + unto + the + women + their + marriage + portions; of + their + own + accord + remit. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.

What was returned and not carried. 1 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 5:5 - carried by the study Can a Muslim marry a Jew or a Christian, per the Qur'an?

Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.

Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.

A report that claims to preserve something the Prophet Muhammad said or did.

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. It follows the platform's standing distinction: the sunnah is the practice, and a hadith is a report claiming to preserve it.

asbab al-nuzul

Accounts of the circumstances in which particular verses of the Qur'an are reported to have been revealed ("occasion of revelation").

A note by the AALAMIN editors. The definition is their own wording, not quoted from a reference work. "Occasion of revelation", in the singular, is the wording the platform's studies use when they say what they rest on.
