And We said to the angels, "Bow down to Adam." They bowed down, except for Satan. He refused, was arrogant, and was one of the disbelievers.
What does the Qur'an say about arrogance as the first sin?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 2:34 And when We said unto the angels: prostrate yourselves before Adam - they fell prostrate, all save Iblis. HE DEMURRED THROUGH PRIDE, AND SO BECAME A DISBELIEVER. In because it is the text's own verdict on the first refusal in the Qur'an, and it names pride as the cause and disbelief as the result, in that order.
- 02 38:74–76 Saving Iblis; HE WAS SCORNFUL and became one of the disbelievers. He said: O Iblis, what hindereth thee from falling prostrate before that which I have created with both My hands? ART THOU TOO PROUD, OR ART THOU OF THE HIGH EXALTED? He said: I am better than him. In as ONE PASSAGE because the diagnosis is put as a question by God and offers two forms of the same fault. ALSO CARRIED by Why did Iblis refuse to bow to Adam?, with a different reason there.
- 03 7:13 He said: THEN GO DOWN HENCE! IT IS NOT FOR THEE TO SHOW PRIDE HERE, so go forth; lo, thou art of those degraded. In because the sentence passed names the offence precisely - showing pride in that place - and the punishment is degradation, its exact inverse.
- 04 40:56 Lo, those who wrangle concerning the revelations of God without a warrant that hath come unto them, THERE IS NAUGHT ELSE IN THEIR BREASTS SAVE PRIDE which they will never attain. So take thou refuge in God. In because it generalises the diagnosis beyond Iblis to anyone disputing revelation, and says the pride is aimed at something unattainable.
- 05 7:146 I SHALL TURN AWAY FROM MY REVELATIONS THOSE WHO MAGNIFY THEMSELVES WRONGFULLY IN THE EARTH, and if they see each token they will not believe in it. In because it states the mechanism - pride first, then the incapacity to see - which is what makes arrogance foundational rather than merely one sin among others. DECLARED DUAL-PLACEMENT from the study What does the Qur'an say about arrogance blinding understanding?
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The first refusal in the Qur'an is not a theft, a lie or a killing. It is a refusal to bow, and the text names its cause twice in one word.
2:34: all the angels prostrated SAVE IBLIS - HE DEMURRED THROUGH PRIDE, AND SO BECAME A DISBELIEVER. The order in that sentence is the finding: pride comes first, and disbelief follows from it. Not a wrong belief producing a wrong act, but a refusal producing a wrong belief.
38:74-76 has God putting the diagnosis as a question: ART THOU TOO PROUD, OR ART THOU OF THE HIGH EXALTED? Two options, both about standing, and neither about reasoning.
7:13 is the sentence, and it fits the crime exactly: IT IS NOT FOR THEE TO SHOW PRIDE HERE - go forth, THOU ART OF THOSE DEGRADED. The punishment for exalting oneself is being brought low.
Two verses generalise it beyond the one case.
40:56 says of people who dispute revelation without warrant: THERE IS NAUGHT ELSE IN THEIR BREASTS SAVE PRIDE WHICH THEY WILL NEVER ATTAIN. The argument is diagnosed as ambition, and the ambition is called futile.
7:146 states the mechanism that makes arrogance more than one fault among many: I SHALL TURN AWAY FROM MY REVELATIONS THOSE WHO MAGNIFY THEMSELVES WRONGFULLY - and then they will not believe though they see every sign. Pride first; then the incapacity.
The study What does the Qur'an say about arrogance blinding understanding? carries the same mechanism from the other end, and the study What does the Qur'an say about humility versus arrogance? carries the conduct.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 2:34, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 5 passages, each with every cleared translation
5 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

A mawnintini kaa a jeya e townitiiɓe ɓeen?"
38:76 O wi'i: "Ko min ɓuri mo moƴƴude. A tagirii lam e yiite, A tagirii mo kaŋko e loopal".
38:74 Ibliis malee (sujuuda dide) boonee, kaafiroota irraa ta’e.
38:75 (Rabbiin) ni jedhe: “Yaa Ibliis! Waan Ani harka kiyyaan uumeef (Aadamiif) sujuuduu maaltu si dhorge? Ni boonte moo, of tuultota irraa taate?”
38:76 (Ibliis) ni jedhe: “Anatu isarra caala; ana ibidda irraa na uumte, isa immoo suphee (horofa)(dhoqqee) irraa isa uumte.”
38:74 Isipokuwa Iblisi; alijivuna na akawa katika makafiri.
38:75 Mwenyezi Mungu akamwambia: Ewe Iblisi! Kipi kilichokuzuia kumtii yule niliyemuumba kwa mikono yangu?

Jie niekada neturės to (t. y. Pranašystės, kurią Allahas suteikė tau). Taigi ieškok prieglobsčio pas Allahą (Muchammedai ﷺ nuo išdidžių). Iš tiesų, Tai Jis, Kuris yra Visa Girdintis, Visa Matantis.

So be patient. The promise of God is true. And ask forgiveness for your sin, and proclaim the praise of your Lord evening and morning.

Be thou patient, then; verily, God's promise is true: and ask thou forgiveness for thy sins, and celebrate the praise of thy Lord in the evening and in the morn

Not equal are the blind and the seeing. Nor are those who believe and work righteousness equal to the sinners. How little you reflect.
And the blind man and the seer are not equal, neither are those who believe and do good works (equal with) the evil-doer. Little do ye reflect

I will turn away from My revelations those who behave proudly on earth without justification. Even if they see every sign, they will not believe in it; and if they see the path of rectitude, they will not adopt it for a path; and if they see the path of error, they will adopt it for a path. That is because they denied Our revelations, and paid no attention to them.

I shall turn away from My revelations those who magnify themselves wrongfully in the earth, and if they see each token believe it not, and if they see the way of righteousness choose it nor for (their) way, and if they see the way of error choose if for (their) way. That is because they deny Our revelations and are used to disregard them
I will turn from my signs those who are big with pride in the earth without right; and if they see every sign they shall not believe therein, and if they see the path of rectitude they shall not take it for a path; but if they see the path of error they shall take it for a path; - that is because they have said our signs are lies and have been careless of them
The unjustly proud ones of the earth will I turn aside from my signs, for even if they see every sign they will not believe them; and if they see the path of uprightness, they will not take it for their path, but if they see the path of error, for their path will they take it. This, - for that they treated our signs as lies, and were heedless of them
I shall soon turn away from My Signs those who behave proudly in the land in an unjust manner; and even if they see all the Signs, they will not believe therein; and if they see the way of righteousness, they will not adopt it as their way; but if they see the way of error, they will adopt it as their way.

In his absence, the people of Moses adopted a calf made from their ornaments-a body which lowed. Did they not see that it could not speak to them, nor guide them in any way? They took it for worship. They were in the wrong.
And the folk of Moses, after (he left them), chose a calf (for worship), (made) out of their ornaments, of saffron hue, which gave a lowing sound. Saw they not that it spake not unto them nor guided them to any way? They chose it, and became wrong-doers
And Moses' people after him took to themselves of their ornaments a corporeal calf that lowed; did they not see that it could not speak with them, nor could it guide them in the path? They took it and they were unjust
And the people of Moses took during his absence a calf made of their ornaments, and ruddy like gold, and lowing. Saw they not that it could not speak to them, nor guide them in the way? Yet they took if for a God and became offenders
And the people of Moses made, in his absence, out of their ornaments, a calf -- a lifeless body, producing a lowing sound. Did they not see that it spoke not to them, nor guided them to any way? They took it for worship and they were transgressors
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 2:34, 38:74-76, 7:13, 40:56, 7:146, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - he + demurred + through + pride; he + was + scornful; art + thou + too + proud; waxed + proud + and + was + of + the + disbelievers. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.

A dashed outline marks a tag the editors handle with extra care. It describes how this study is filed and shown, not what the verses say.
