He who created death and life-to test you-as to which of you is better in conduct. He is the Almighty, the Forgiving.
What does the Qur'an say about trials and testing from God?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 67:2 Who hath created LIFE AND DEATH that He may try you, which of you is best in conduct. In because it makes the trial the stated purpose of existence itself, and because it names death as part of the apparatus, not only life.
- 02 2:155–157 We shall try you with something of fear and hunger, and loss of wealth and lives and crops; but give glad tidings to the steadfast - who say, when a misfortune striketh them: we are God's and unto Him we are returning. In as ONE PASSAGE because it is the only place the trials are itemised and the response supplied. ALSO CARRIED by What does the Qur'an say about facing the death of a loved one? and What does the Qur'an say about being tested with fear, hunger and loss?, with different reasons there.
- 03 29:2–3 Do men imagine that they will be left at ease because they say: we believe, AND WILL NOT BE TESTED? Lo, We tested those who were before you. Thus God knoweth those who are sincere, and knoweth those who feign. In as ONE PASSAGE because the question in 29:2 is the assumption being demolished and 29:3 is the demolition.
- 04 2:214 Or think ye that ye will enter paradise while yet there hath not come unto you the like of that which came to those who passed away before you? Affliction and adversity befell them, and they were SO SHAKEN that the messenger and those who believed with him said: WHEN COMETH GOD'S HELP? In because it is the frankest verse in the set - it records the messengers themselves at the end of their endurance.
- 05 6:165 He hath placed you as viceroys of the earth and hath exalted some of you in rank above others, THAT HE MAY TRY YOU by that which He hath given you. In because it makes the inequality itself the instrument of the test. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about humans as stewards (khalifa) and the trust of the earth?, with a different reason there.
- 06 21:35 Every soul must taste of death, AND WE TRY YOU WITH EVIL AND WITH GOOD, for ordeal. And unto Us ye will be returned. In because it says the good things are the trial too, which is the least intuitive thing in the set.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Six passages, and the first of them makes a claim so large it reframes the rest.
67:2 says God created LIFE AND DEATH in order to try you - which of you is best in conduct. The trial is not something that happens within existence; on this verse it is what existence is for. And death is on the same list as life.
21:35 adds the clause readers least expect: WE TRY YOU WITH EVIL AND WITH GOOD. Prosperity is named as an ordeal in the same breath as affliction. 6:165 makes the same move about rank - some are raised above others precisely so that they may be tried by what they have been given.
2:155-157 is the only place the trials are itemised, and the list is concrete: fear, hunger, loss of wealth, loss of lives, loss of crops. It then supplies the words to say, which is why What does the Qur'an say about facing the death of a loved one? carries the same passage.
Two verses attack an assumption directly. 29:2 asks whether people imagine that saying WE BELIEVE will exempt them from being tested. And 2:214 is the frankest sentence in the set: those before you were SO SHAKEN that the messenger himself and the believers with him cried WHEN COMETH GOD'S HELP? The text records a prophet at the end of his patience and does not apologise for it.
What none of these verses does is explain WHY, beyond the stated purpose of distinguishing the sincere from those who feign. The question of whether a trial is deserved, and of what it proves about the person tried, is not answered here. The related material on hardship and its endurance is carried by the studies What does the Qur'an say about patience through trial? and What does the Qur'an mean that "with hardship comes ease"?, and by What does the Qur'an say about being tested with fear, hunger and loss?
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 67:2, widening across 6 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 6 passages, each with every cleared translation
6 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Safa and Marwa are among the rites of God. Whoever makes the Pilgrimage to the House, or performs the Umrah, commits no error by circulating between them. Whoever volunteers good-God is Appreciative and Cognizant.
Lo! (the mountains) As-Safa and Al-Marwah are among the indications of Allah. It is therefore no sin for him who is on pilgrimage to the House (of Allah) or visiteth it, to go around them (as the pagan custom is). And he who doeth good of his own accord, (for him) lo! Allah is Responsive, Aware
Verily, Zafa and Merwah are of the beacons of God, and he who makes the pilgrimage unto the House, or visits it, it is no crime for him to compass them both about; and he who obeys his own impulse to a good work,- God is grateful and doth know
Verily, Safa and Marwah are among the monuments of God: whoever then maketh a pilgrimage to the temple, or visiteth it, shall not be to blame if he go round about them both. And as for him who of his own accord doeth what is good - God is Grateful, Knowing
Moreover Safa and Merwah are two of the monuments of God: Whoever therefore goeth on pilgrimage to the temple of Mecca or visiteth it, it shall be no crime in him if he compass them both. And as for him who voluntarily performeth a good work; verily God is grateful and knowing

Those who suppress the proofs and the guidance We have revealed, after We have clarified them to humanity in the Scripture-those-God curses them, and the cursers curse them.

Verily, those who hide what we have revealed of manifest signs and of guidance after we have manifested it to men in the Book, them God shall curse, and those who curse shall curse them too
They who conceal aught that we have sent down, either of clear proof or of guidance, after what we have so clearly shewn to men in the Book, God shall curse them, and they who curse shall curse them

Do men then reckon that they will be left alone to say, 'We believe,' and not be tried

29:2 Νομίζουν οι άνθρωποι ότι με το να λένε: «Πιστεύουμε», θα αφεθούν και δε θα δοκιμάζονται (με τις εντολές και τις απαγορεύσεις και τις κακουχίες);

Did ye count to enter Paradise, while there had nothing come to you like those who passed away before you; there touched them violence and harm, and they were made to quake, until the Apostle and those who believed with him said, 'When (comes) God's help? Is not God's help then surely nigh
Think ye to enter Paradise, when no such things have come upon you, as on those who flourish before you? Ills and troubles tried them; and so tossed were they by trials, that the Apostle and they who shared his faith, said, "When will the help of God come?" - Is not the help of God nigh
Did ye think ye should enter paradise, when as yet no such thing had happened unto you, as hath happened unto those who have been before you? They suffered calamity, and tribulation, and were afflicted; so that the apostle, and they who believed with him, said; when will the help of God come? Is not the help of God nigh

Humanity used to be one community; then God sent the prophets, bringing good news and giving warnings. And He sent down with them the Scripture, with the truth, to judge between people regarding their differences. But none differed over it except those who were given it-after the proofs had come to them-out of mutual envy between them. Then God guided those who believed to the truth they had disputed, in accordance with His will. God guides whom He wills to a straight path.
Mankind were one community, and Allah sent (unto them) prophets as bearers of good tidings and as warners, and revealed therewith the Scripture with the truth that it might judge between mankind concerning that wherein they differed. Mankind was but one people; and God sent prophets to announce glad tidings and to warn; and He sent down with them the Book of Truth, that it might decide the disputes of men; and none disputed but those to whom the Book had been given, after the clear tokens had reached them, - being full of mutual jealousy. Mankind was of one faith, and God sent prophets bearing good tidings, and denouncing threats, and sent down with them the scripture in truth, that it might judge between men of that concerning which they disagreed: And none disagreed concerning it, except those to whom the same scriptures were delivered, after the declarations of God's will had come unto them, out of envy among themselves. And God directed those who believed, to that truth concerning which they disagreed, by his will: For God directeth whom he pleaseth into the right way

Say, "Am I to seek a Lord other than God, when He is the Lord of all things?" No soul gets except what it is due, and no soul bears the burdens of another. Then to your Lord is your return, then He will inform you regarding your disputes.
Say: Shall I seek another than Allah for Lord, when He is Lord of all things? Each soul earneth only on its own account, nor doth any laden bear another's load. Then unto your Lord is your return and He will tell you that wherein ye differed
Say, 'Other than God shall I crave for a Lord when He is Lord of all?' but no soul shall earn aught save against itself; nor shall one bearing a burden bear the burden of another; and then unto your Lord is your return, and He will inform you concerning that whereon ye do dispute
SAY: Shall I seek any other Lord than God, when He is Lord of all things? No soul shall labour but for itself; and no burdened one shall bear another's burden. At last ye shall return to your Lord, and he will declare that to you about which you differ
Say, shall I desire any other Lord besides God? The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. We did not grant immortality to any human being before you. Should you die, are they then the immortal?
We appointed immortality for no mortal before thee. What! if thou diest, can they be immortal
We never made for any mortal before thee immortality; what, if thou shouldst die, will they live on for aye

And when those who disbelieve behold thee, they but choose thee out for mockery, (saying): Is this he who maketh mention of your gods? And they would deny all mention of the Beneficent

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it5 of the 6 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 67:2, 2:155-157, 29:2-3, 2:214, 6:165, 21:35, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - that + he + may + try + you; try + you + which; prove + you + which; tried + before + them; surely + try + you. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 12 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 3:152 - a specific battle; 3:154 - carried by What does the Qur'an say about the peace (sakina) God sends down?; 3:186 - near-identical to 2:155, though it adds 'ye will hear much wrong'; 5:48 - revelation; 5:94 - the pilgrimage hunting rule; 11:7 - carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about creation in 'six days'?; 14:34 - ingratitude; 20:90 - the golden calf; 44:17 - a historical instance; 47:4 - the rules of war; 47:31 - near-identical to 29:3; 60:10 - 'test' in the sense of examine, a procedural rule.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
