O Prophet! Say to your wives, "If you desire the life of this world and its finery, then let me compensate you, and release you kindly.
What does the Qur'an say about the Prophet's wives?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 33:28–29 O Prophet, say unto thy wives: IF YE DESIRE THE WORLD'S LIFE AND ITS ADORNMENT, COME, I WILL CONTENT YOU AND WILL RELEASE YOU WITH A FAIR RELEASE. But if ye desire God and His messenger and the abode of the Hereafter, then lo, God hath prepared for the good among you an immense reward. In as ONE PASSAGE because the choice and both its branches are one offer. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about the Prophet's household?, with a different reason there.
- 02 33:32 O ye wives of the Prophet, YE ARE NOT LIKE ANY OTHER WOMEN. If ye keep your duty, then be not soft of speech, lest he in whose heart is a disease aspire to you, but utter customary speech. In because it is the verse that expressly distinguishes them from women generally. ALSO CARRIED by the study Does the Qur'an say women must stay at home?, with a different reason there.
- 03 33:30–31 O ye wives of the Prophet, whosoever of you committeth manifest lewdness, THE PUNISHMENT FOR HER WILL BE DOUBLED, and that is easy for God. And whosoever of you is submissive unto God and His messenger and doeth right, WE SHALL GIVE HER HER REWARD TWICE OVER. In as ONE PASSAGE because both halves double, in both directions, and quoting either alone misrepresents the arrangement.
- 04 33:6 The Prophet is closer to the believers than their selves, AND HIS WIVES ARE AS THEIR MOTHERS. In because it defines their standing toward the community. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does 'closer than the jugular vein' mean in the Qur'an? and the study What does the Qur'an say about the Prophet's household?, with different reasons there.
- 05 33:53 And when ye ask of them anything, ASK IT OF THEM FROM BEHIND A CURTAIN. That is purer for your hearts and for their hearts. And it is not for you to cause annoyance to the messenger of God, nor that ye should ever marry his wives after him. In because it is the verse in which the word usually rendered hijab occurs, and its subject is a doorway in one house. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the text say about women's covering - khimar, jilbab, and the verse the word hijab actually appears in?, with a different reason there.
- 06 66:1–5 O Prophet, why bannest thou that which God hath made lawful for thee, seeking to please thy wives?... When the Prophet confided a fact unto one of his wives and she afterward divulged it... IF YE TWAIN TURN UNTO GOD REPENTANT, YE HAVE CAUSE TO DO SO, FOR YOUR HEARTS DESIRED THE BAN. In as ONE PASSAGE because it is the one narrated domestic episode and it rebukes several parties at once. ALSO CARRIED by the studies Does the Qur'an ever correct the Prophet? and What does the Qur'an say about the Prophet's household?, with different reasons there.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Six passages, and what stands out is how much of the material is a set of DEMANDS rather than honours.
33:30-31 is the clearest instance and it runs both ways. Any of them who commits manifest lewdness has THE PUNISHMENT DOUBLED. Any of them who is obedient and does right has THE REWARD DOUBLED. Their position raises the stakes in both directions, and the verse states both halves in the same breath.
33:32 gives the reason such rules apply to them at all: YE ARE NOT LIKE ANY OTHER WOMEN. That clause is the reason the study Does the Qur'an say women must stay at home? exists - the instructions in this passage cannot be generalised, because the passage itself says so.
33:28-29 offers them a choice, and one option is to leave with a settlement: I WILL CONTENT YOU AND RELEASE YOU WITH A FAIR RELEASE. The alternative is stated as desiring God and the Hereafter, with a reward attached.
33:6 sets their standing toward the community - AS THEIR MOTHERS - and 33:53 sets the community's conduct toward them: ask from behind a curtain, do not annoy the messenger, and do not marry his wives after him.
66:1-5 is the one narrated episode, and nobody in it comes off well: a self-imposed prohibition the Prophet is corrected for, a confidence divulged, and two of the wives told they have cause to repent.
What the Qur'an does not do is name them, count them, or describe them individually. Everything a reader is likely to know about the individual wives comes from and biography, and no such source has cleared the rights audit.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 33:28–29, widening across 6 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 6 passages, each with every cleared translation
6 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

O wives of the prophet, ye are not as other women: If ye fear God, be not too complaisant in speech, lest he should covet, in whose heart is a disease of incontinence; but speak the speech which is convenient

32. Pranašo žmonos, jūs nesate kaip jokios kitos moterys. Jei atliekate savo pareigą (Allahui), tada nebūkite malonios žodžiuose, kad tas, kurio širdyje yra liga (veidmainystė, arba blogas svetimavimo troškimas) nebūtų patrauktas geismo, tačiau kalbėkite garbingu būdu.
Yaa dubartoota nabiyyichaa! Isin akka dubartii biraa tokkolleetii miti. yoo Rabbiin sodaattan, jecha keessan hin laaffisinaa; Akka inni onnee isaa keessa dhukkubni jiru hin kajeelleef, jecha bareedaa dubbadhaa. [6]

And settle in your homes; and do not display yourselves, as in the former days of ignorance. And perform the prayer, and give regular charity, and obey God and His Messenger. God desires to remove all impurity from you, O People of the Household, and to purify you thoroughly.
And stay in your houses. Bedizen not yourselves with the bedizenment of the Time of Ignorance. Be regular in prayer, and pay the poor-due, and obey Allah and His messenger. Allah's wish is but to remove uncleanness far from you, O Folk of the Household, and cleanse you with a thorough cleansing

The Prophet is more caring of the believers than they are of themselves, and his wives are mothers to them. And blood-relatives are closer to one another in God's Book than the believers or the emigrants, though you should do good to your friends. That is inscribed in the Book.

The Prophet is closer to the believers than their selves, and his wives are (as) their mothers. And the owners of kinship are closer one to another in the ordinance of Allah than (other) believers and the fugitives (who fled from Mecca), except that ye should do kindness to your friends. This is written in the Book (of nature)
The prophet is nearer of kin to the believers than themselves, and his wives are their mothers. And blood relations are nearer in kin to each other by the Book of God than the believers and those who fled; only your doing kindness to your kindred, that is traced in the Book
Nearer of kin to the faithful is the Prophet, than they are to their own selves. His wives are their mothers. According to the Book of God, they who are related by blood, are nearer the one to the other than other believers, and than those who have fled their country for the cause of God: but whatever kindness ye shew to your kindred, shall be noted down in the Book
The prophet is nigher unto the true believers than their own souls; and his wives are their mothers. Those who are related by consanguinity are nigher of kin the one of them unto the others, according to the book of God, than the other true believers, and the Mohajerun: Unless that ye do what is fitting and reasonable to your relations in general. This is written in the book of God

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none.

That He may ask the loyal of their loyalty. And He hath prepared a painful doom for the unfaithful
that He might ask the truth-tellers of their truth. But He has prepared for those who misbelieve a grievous woe
That God may question the men of truth as to their truth. But a sore torment hath He prepared for the unbelievers
that God may examine the speakers of truth concerning their veracity: And He hath prepared a painful torment for the unbelievers

O you who believe! Do not enter the homes of the Prophet, unless you are given permission to come for a meal; and do not wait for its preparation. And when you are invited, go in. And when you have eaten, disperse, without lingering for conversation. This irritates the Prophet, and he shies away from you, but God does not shy away from the truth. And when you ask his wives for something, ask them from behind a screen; that is purer for your hearts and their hearts. You must never offend the Messenger of God, nor must you ever marry his wives after him, for that would be an enormity with God.

O Ye who believe! Enter not the dwellings of the Prophet for a meal without waiting for the proper time, unless permission be granted you. But if ye are invited, enter, and, when your meal is ended, then disperse. Linger not for conversation. Lo! that would cause annoyance to the Prophet, and he would be shy of (asking) you (to go); but Allah is not shy of the truth. And when ye ask of them (the wives of the Prophet) anything, ask it of them from behind a curtain. That is purer for your hearts and for their hearts. And it is not for you to cause annoyance to the messenger of Allah, nor that ye should ever marry his wives after him. Lo! that in Allah's sight would be an enormity
O ye who believe! do not enter the houses of the prophet, unless leave be given you, for a meal,- not watching till it is cooked! But when ye are invited, then enter; and when ye have fed, disperse, not engaging in familiar discourse. Verily, that would annoy the prophet and he would be ashamed for your sake, but God is not ashamed of the truth. And when ye ask them for an article, ask them from behind a curtain; that is purer for your hearts and for theirs. It is not right for you to annoy the prophet of God, nor to wed his wives after him ever; verily, that is with God a serious thing
O Believers! enter not into the houses of the Prophet, save by his leave, for a meal, without waiting his time. When ye are invited then enter, and when ye have eaten then disperse at once. And engage not in familiar talk, for this would cause the Prophet trouble, and he would be ashamed to bid you go; but God is not ashamed to say the truth. And when ye would ask any gift of his wives, ask it from behind a veil. Purer will this be for your hearts and for their hearts. And ye must not trouble the Apostle of God, nor marry his wives, after him, for ever. This would be a grave offence with God
O true believers, enter not the houses of the prophet, unless it be permitted you to eat meat with him, without waiting his convenient time: But when ye are invited, then enter. And when ye shall have eaten, disperse yourselves; and stay not to enter into familiar discourse: For this incommodeth the prophet. He is ashamed to bid you depart; but God is not ashamed of the truth. And when ye ask of the prophet's wives what ye may have occasion for, ask it of them from behind a curtain. This will be more pure for your hearts and their hearts. Neither is it fit for you to give any uneasiness to the apostle of God, or to marry his wives after him for ever: For this would be a grievous thing in the sight of God

- Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none.

You may defer any of them you wish, and receive any of them you wish. Should you desire any of those you had deferred, there is no blame on you. This is more proper, so that they will be comforted, and not be grieved, and be content with what you have given each one of them. God knows what is within your hearts. God is Omniscient and Clement.
Thou canst defer whom thou wilt of them and receive unto thee whom thou wilt, and whomsoever thou desirest of those whom thou hast set aside (temporarily), it is no sin for thee (to receive her again); that is better; that they may be comforted and not grieve, and may all be pleased with what thou givest them. Allah knoweth what is in your hearts (O men), and Allah is ever Forgiving, Clement
Put off whomsoever thou wilt of them and take to thyself whomsoever thou wilt, or whomsoever thou cravest of those whom thou hast deposed, and it shall be no crime against thee. That is nigher to cheering their eyes and that they should not grieve, and should be satisfied with what thou dost bring them all; but God knows best what is in their hearts; and God is knowing, clement
Thou mayst decline for the present whom thou wilt of them, and thou mayest take to thy bed her whom thou wilt, and whomsoever thou shalt long for of those thou shalt have before neglected; and this shall not be a crime in thee. Thus will it be easier to give them the desire of their eyes, and not to put them to grief, and to satisfy them with what thou shalt accord to each of them. God knoweth what is in your hearts, and God is Knowing, Gracious
Thou mayest postpone the turn of such of thy wives as thou shalt please, in being called to thy bed; and thou mayest take unto thee her whom thou shalt please, and her whom thou shalt desire of those whom thou shalt have before rejected: And it shall be no crime in thee. This will be more easy, that they may be entirely content, and may not be grieved, but may be well pleased with what thou shalt give every of them: God knoweth whatever is in your hearts; and God is knowing and gracious

66:4 4. Jei jūs abi (žmonos) atgailausite Allahui, (tai geriausia), nes jūsų širdys nuklydo. Tačiau jei jūs padėsite viena kitai prieš jį (Muchammedą ﷺ ), tada tikrai Allahas yra jo Globėjas ir Džibrilis (Gabrielius), ir teisingi tikintieji, ir angelai, be to, yra (jo) padėjėjai.

66:1 Ewe Nabii! Kwa nini unaharamisha alichokuhalalishia Mwenyezi Mungu? Unatafuta kuwaridhi wake zako.
Alipomwambia hayo, huyo mke akasema: 'Ni nani aliyekwambia haya?'
66:5 Asaa Mola wake Mlezi, akikupeni talaka, akampa wake wengine badala yenu nyinyi, walio bora kuliko nyinyi, wanyenyekevu, Waumini, watawa, waliotubu, wenye kushika ibada, wafanyao heri, waliowahi kuoleka na wale ambao hawajawahi kuoleka.
66:1 Profet!
66:4 Eğer sizler (iki hanımı) Allah'a tevbe ederseniz (ne iyi); çünkü kalpleriniz eğrilik gösterdi.

Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 33:28-29, 33:32, 33:30-31, 33:6, 33:53, 66:1-5, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - o + wives + of + the + prophet; mothers + of + the + believers; say + unto + thy + wives; release + you + with + a + fair + release. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 4 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 4:102 - the fear-prayer, taken up by the study What does the Qur'an say about praying in fear or in battle?; 33:37 - carried by the study Does the Qur'an ever correct the Prophet?, where the correction is the subject; 33:50 - a dispensation specific to the Prophet; 33:59 - carried by the study What does the text say about women's covering - khimar, jilbab, and the verse the word hijab actually appears in?
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.

A dashed outline marks a tag the editors handle with extra care. It describes how this study is filed and shown, not what the verses say.
