O prophet! Why do you prohibit what God has permitted for you, seeking to please your wives? God is Forgiving and Merciful.
What does Surah at-Tahrim say?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 66:1 O Prophet! Why bannest thou that which Allah hath made lawful for thee, seeking to please thy wives? And Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. This is here because it opens the surah by putting a question to the Prophet about a prohibition he had made, worded four ways: "why holdest thou that to be prohibited which God hath allowed thee" in Sale, "wherefore dost thou prohibit what God has made lawful to thee" in Palmer, "Why bannest thou that which Allah hath made lawful for thee" in Pickthall and "Why do you prohibit what God has permitted for you" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the studies What does the Qur'an say about the Prophet's household?, What does the Qur'an say about the Prophet's wives? and Does the Qur'an ever correct the Prophet?, with different reasons there.
- 02 66:2 Allah hath made lawful for you (Muslims) absolution from your oaths (of such a kind), and Allah is your Protector. He is the Knower, the Wise. This is here because it is the release that follows, and what is released differs: "the dissolution of your oaths" in Sale and Itani, "release from your oaths" in Rodwell, "to expiate your oaths" in Palmer and "absolution from your oaths (of such a kind)" in Pickthall, whose brackets are his own. ALSO CARRIED by the studies What does the Qur'an say about the Prophet's household? and What does the Qur'an say about the Prophet's wives?, with different reasons there.
- 03 66:3 When the Prophet confided a fact unto one of his wives and when she afterward divulged it and Allah apprised him thereof, he made known (to her) part thereof and passed over part. And when he told it her she said: Who hath told thee? He said: The Knower, the Aware hath told me. This is here because it reports a confidence told to one wife and passed on, and what was told is named differently: "a certain accident" in Sale, "a recent occurrence" in Rodwell, "a recent event" in Palmer and "confided a fact unto one of his wives" in Pickthall. The verse does not name the wife. ALSO CARRIED by the studies What does the Qur'an say about the Prophet's household? and What does the Qur'an say about the Prophet's wives?, with different reasons there.
- 04 66:4 If ye twain turn unto Allah repentant, (ye have cause to do so) for your hearts desired (the ban); and if ye aid one another against him (Muhammad) then lo! Allah, even He, is his Protecting Friend, and Gabriel and the righteous among the believers; and furthermore the angels are his helpers. This is here because it is where the renderings part company most sharply: "for your hearts have swerved" in Sale, "for now have your hearts gone astray" in Rodwell and "for your hearts desired (the ban)" in Pickthall with his own brackets, against "then your hearts have listened" in Itani, which reads the clause the other way round. ALSO CARRIED by the studies What does the Qur'an say about the Prophet's household? and What does the Qur'an say about the Prophet's wives?, with different reasons there.
- 05 66:5 It may happen that his Lord, if he divorce you, will give him in your stead wives better than you, submissive (to Allah), believing, pious, penitent, devout, inclined to fasting, widows and maids. This is here because it lists what better wives would be, and the last pair is worded five ways: "both such as have been known by other men, and virgins" in Sale, "both known of men and virgins" in Rodwell, "such as have known men and virgins too" in Palmer, "widows and maids" in Pickthall and "previously married, or virgins" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the studies What does the Qur'an say about the Prophet's household? and What does the Qur'an say about the Prophet's wives?, with different reasons there.
- 06 66:6 O ye who believe! Ward off from yourselves and your families a Fire whereof the fuel is men and stones, over which are set angels strong, severe, who resist not Allah in that which He commandeth them, but do that which they are commanded. This is here because the address turns here from the household to believers and theirs: "save your souls, and those of your families, from the fire" in Sale, "Ward off from yourselves and your families a Fire" in Pickthall and "Protect yourselves and your families from a Fire" in Itani; those set over it are "angels fierce and terrible" in Sale, "angels stout and stern" in Palmer and "angels, fierce and powerful" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the studies What does the Qur'an say about raising children?, What does the Qur'an say about angels - and do they have free will? and What does the Qur'an say about the rights of children on their parents?, with different reasons there.
- 07 66:7 (Then it will be said): O ye who disbelieve! Make no excuses for yourselves this day. Ye are only being paid for what ye used to do. This is here because it is addressed to those who disbelieved and refuses them an excuse: "excuse not yourselves this day" in Sale, "Make no excuses for yourselves this day" in Pickthall and "Make no excuses today" in Itani.
- 08 66:8 O ye who believe! Turn unto Allah in sincere repentance! It may be that your Lord will remit from you your evil deeds and bring you into Gardens underneath which rivers flow, on the day when Allah will not abase the Prophet and those who believe with him. Their light will run before them and on their right hands; they will say: Our Lord! Perfect our light for us, and forgive us! Lo! Thou art Able to do all things. This is here because it is the surah's instruction to repent and the prayer that follows it: "turn unto God with a sincere repentance" in Sale and "Repent to God with sincere repentance" in Itani; then "Lord, make our light perfect" in Sale, "Perfect our light for us" in Pickthall and "complete our light for us" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the studies What does the Qur'an say about turning to God after wrong rather than despairing?, What is the prayer 'complete for us our light'?, What does the Qur'an say about good deeds wiping out bad ones?, What does the Qur'an say about deeds becoming light before a person on the Day of Judgment?, What does the Qur'an say about God accepting repentance again and again? and What does the Qur'an say about sincere repentance (tawba)?, with different reasons there.
- 09 66:9 O Prophet! Strive against the disbelievers and the hypocrites, and be stern with them. Hell will be their home, a hapless journey's end. This is here because the renderings differ over what is being asked for, and the difference is the whole of it: "make war on the infidels and hypocrites" in Rodwell and "fight strenuously against the misbelievers and hypocrites" in Palmer, against "Strive against the disbelievers and the hypocrites" in Pickthall and "Strive hard against the disbelievers and the hypocrites" in Itani, while Sale alone divides the means - "attack the infidels with arms, and the hypocrites with arguments". The verse addresses the Prophet, and this study neither resolves the difference nor carries it beyond him.
- 10 66:10 Allah citeth an example for those who disbelieve: the wife of Noah and the wife of Lot, who were under two of Our righteous slaves yet betrayed them so that they (the husbands) availed them naught against Allah and it was said (unto them): Enter the Fire along with those who enter. This is here because it names two figures as an example to those who disbelieve, and what they did is worded differently: "the wife of Noah, and the wife of Lot" in Sale, and "they deceived them both" in Sale against "they betrayed them" in Palmer and Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about Lot and his people?, with a different reason there.
- 11 66:11 And Allah citeth an example for those who believe: the wife of Pharaoh when she said: My Lord! Build for me a home with thee in the Garden, and deliver me from Pharaoh and his work, and deliver me from evil-doing folk. This is here because it sets a second example against the first, and what she asks for is worded three ways: "build me an house with thee in paradise" in Sale, "Build for me a home with thee in the Garden" in Pickthall and "build for me, with you, a house in Paradise" in Itani.
- 12 66:12 And Mary, daughter of 'Imran, whose body was chaste, therefor We breathed therein something of Our Spirit. And she put faith in the words of her Lord and His scriptures, and was of the obedient. This is here because it closes the surah with a fourth figure, and the renderings describe her in words that are not equivalent: "who preserved her chastity" in Sale, "who kept her maidenhood" in Rodwell, "who guarded her private parts" in Palmer, "whose body was chaste" in Pickthall and "who guarded her womb" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the studies What does the Qur'an say about the virgin birth of Jesus? and What does the Qur'an say about Mary (Maryam)?, with different reasons there.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Surah at-Tahrim is twelve verses long. It opens by addressing the Prophet about something he had forbidden himself, reports a confidence that was passed on, turns to believers with instructions about their households and about repentance, and closes with four figures held up as examples.
At 66:1 the address is a question put to the Prophet. Sale has "why holdest thou that to be prohibited which God hath allowed thee", Palmer "wherefore dost thou prohibit what God has made lawful to thee", Pickthall "Why bannest thou that which Allah hath made lawful for thee" and Itani "Why do you prohibit what God has permitted for you", each followed in Sale by "seeking to please thy wives", in Pickthall by "seeking to please thy wives?" and in Itani by "seeking to please your wives?" At 66:2 what follows is worded as release: "the dissolution of your oaths" in Sale and Itani, "release from your oaths" in Rodwell, "to expiate your oaths" in Palmer and "absolution from your oaths (of such a kind)" in Pickthall, whose brackets are his own.
At 66:3 a confidence is told to one wife and passed on: "a certain accident" in Sale. What was told is "a certain accident" in Sale, "a recent occurrence" in Rodwell and "a recent event" in Palmer, where Pickthall has "confided a fact unto one of his wives" and Itani "told something in confidence to one of his wives". The surah does not name either wife, and neither does this study.
66:4 is where the renderings part company most sharply. Sale has "for your hearts have swerved", Rodwell "for now have your hearts gone astray" and Pickthall "for your hearts desired (the ban)" with his own brackets - while Itani has "then your hearts have listened", which reads the same clause the other way round. At 66:5 what better wives would be is listed, and the last pair differs: "both such as have been known by other men, and virgins" in Sale, "both known of men and virgins" in Rodwell, "such as have known men and virgins too" in Palmer, "widows and maids" in Pickthall and "previously married, or virgins" in Itani.
At 66:6 the address turns to believers and their households: "save your souls, and those of your families, from the fire" in Sale, "Ward off from yourselves and your families a Fire" in Pickthall and "Protect yourselves and your families from a Fire" in Itani. Those set over it are "angels fierce and terrible" in Sale, "angels fierce and mighty" in Rodwell, "angels stout and stern" in Palmer, "angels strong, severe" in Pickthall and "angels, fierce and powerful" in Itani.
At 66:8 the instruction is to repent, and the prayer that follows is "Lord, make our light perfect" in Sale, "Perfect our light for us" in Pickthall and "complete our light for us" in Itani.
At 66:9 the renderings differ over what is being asked for. Sale alone names means on both sides - "attack the infidels with arms, and the hypocrites with arguments" - where Rodwell has "make war on the infidels and hypocrites", Palmer "fight strenuously against the misbelievers and hypocrites", Pickthall "Strive against the disbelievers and the hypocrites" and Itani "Strive hard against the disbelievers and the hypocrites". War in two, striving in two, and a division of means in one. The verse addresses the Prophet, and this study neither resolves the difference nor carries it beyond him.
The surah closes on four figures. At 66:10 "the wife of Noah, and the wife of Lot" are named as an example to those who disbelieve, and what they did is "they deceived them both" in Sale against "they betrayed them" in Palmer and Itani. At 66:11 "the wife of Pharaoh" is the example to those who believe, asking that a house be built for her - "build me an house with thee in paradise" in Sale, "Build for me a home with thee in the Garden" in Pickthall and "build for me, with you, a house in Paradise" in Itani. At 66:12 Mary is named, and the renderings describe her in words that are not equivalent: "who preserved her chastity" in Sale, "who kept her maidenhood" in Rodwell, "who guarded her private parts" in Palmer, "whose body was chaste" in Pickthall and "who guarded her womb" in Itani.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which uncleared source would be needed. It does not name the wives the surah leaves unnamed, say what was forbidden or what was confided, or say what the instruction rendered as "make war on the infidels and hypocrites" by Rodwell required in practice: naming any of those needs an occasion of revelation or a biography, and this study holds neither in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read the surah: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 66:1, widening across 12 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 12 passages, each with every cleared translation
12 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Easy-read (simplified)in tatoobaa ilaa llaahi faqad saghat quloobukumaa wa'in tazaaharaa 'alayhi fa'inna llaaha huwa mawlaahu wajibreelu wasaalihu l-mu'mineena wal-malaa'ikatu ba'da dhaalika zaheer

The translators word this verse differently
If you repent to God, then your hearts have listened. But if you band together against him, then God is his Ally, as is Gabriel, and the righteous believers. In addition, the angels will assist him.
Compare translations (4)
If ye twain turn unto Allah repentant, (ye have cause to do so) for your hearts desired (the ban); and if ye aid one another against him (Muhammad) then lo! Allah, even He, is his Protecting Friend, and Gabriel and the righteous among the believers; and furthermore the angels are his helpers
If ye both turn repentant unto God, - for your hearts have swerved! - but if ye back each other up against him,- verily, God, He is the sovereign; and Gabriel and the righteous of the believers, and the angels after that, will back him up
If ye both be turned to God in penitence, for now have your hearts gone astray . . . . but if ye conspire against the Prophet, then know that God is his Protector, and Gabriel, and every just man among the faithful; and the angels are his helpers besides
If ye both be turned unto God -- for your hearts have swerved -- it is well: But if ye join against him, verily God is his patron; and Gabriel, and the good man among the faithful, and the angels also are his assistants

When the Prophet confided a fact unto one of his wives and when she afterward divulged it and Allah apprised him thereof, he made known (to her) part thereof and passed over part. And when he told it her she said: Who hath told thee? He said: The Knower, the Aware hath told me
And when the prophet told as a secret to one of his wives a recent event, and when she gave information thereof and exposed it, he acquainted her with some of it and avoided part of it. But when he informed her of it, she said, 'Who told thee this?' he said, 'The wise one, the well-aware informed me

A Allah navodi kao primjer onih koji vjeruju ženu faraonovu, kad je rekla: “Gospodaru moj, sagradi mi kod Sebe kuću u Džennetu i spasi me od faraona i njegovih postupaka, i izbavi me od ljudi nepravednih!”

- Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across five translations - the four public-domain renderings of Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880 and Pickthall 1930, and Itani 2012 - of 66:1-12, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified.
How this set was arrived at. This is a study of one surah, so it carries every verse of it: all twelve verses of Surah at-Tahrim, each as its own passage with its own reason. No verse of the surah is left out, so none is recorded as not carried.
Verses carried by more than one study. Several passages here also serve other studies. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
