And of His signs is that He created for you mates from among yourselves, so that you may find tranquility in them; and He planted love and compassion between you. In this are signs for people who reflect.
What does the Qur'an say about the 'signs' in creation for those who think?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 30:21 And of His signs is this: He created for you helpmeets from yourselves that ye might FIND REST IN THEM, and He ordained between you LOVE AND MERCY. Lo, herein indeed are portents FOR FOLK WHO REFLECT. In because the sign offered is a human relationship rather than a natural phenomenon, which is unusual, and because the closing formula is the one this question names.
- 02 30:22 And of His signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth, AND THE DIFFERENCE OF YOUR LANGUAGES AND COLOURS. Lo, herein indeed are portents for men of knowledge. In because human diversity is named as a sign in the same breath as the heavens, and the audience named is those who know.
- 03 16:11 Therewith He causeth crops to grow for you, and the olive and the date-palm and grapes and all kinds of fruit. Lo, herein is indeed a portent FOR PEOPLE WHO REFLECT. In because the sign is agriculture, itemised, and offered to people who think about it.
- 04 16:69 There cometh forth from their bellies a drink of divers hues, wherein is healing for mankind. Lo, herein is indeed a portent for people who reflect. In because it is the bee, and because the portent is attached to something anyone can watch. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about bees, ants and birds as communities?, with a different reason there.
- 05 45:13 And He hath made of service unto you whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is in the earth; it is all from Him. Lo, herein verily are portents FOR A PEOPLE WHO REFLECT. In because it is the widest statement of the class - everything - closed with the same formula.
- 06 10:24 The similitude of the life of the world is only as water which We send down from the sky... until, when the earth hath taken on her ornament and is embellished, and her people deem that they are masters of her, Our commandment cometh by night or by day and We make it as reaped corn. THUS DO WE EXPOUND THE REVELATIONS FOR PEOPLE WHO REFLECT. In because the sign here is a warning rather than a wonder, which keeps the study honest about what the formula attaches to.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
The Qur'an has a formula it uses dozens of times: a phenomenon is described, and then - HEREIN ARE PORTENTS FOR A PEOPLE WHO REFLECT. This study is about what gets named as the phenomenon, and the answer is broader than a reader expects.
Some are natural, as expected. Crops, olives, date-palms and grapes (16:11). The bee and what comes out of it (16:69). Everything in the heavens and the earth (45:13).
But 30:21 names a MARRIAGE. Of His signs is that He created spouses for you so that you might find rest in them, and put between you love and mercy - and then the formula. The sign is an ordinary human relationship, and what is pointed at is the affection in it.
And 30:22 names HUMAN DIFFERENCE: the creation of the heavens and the earth, AND THE VARIETY OF YOUR LANGUAGES AND COLOURS. Those two things in one verse, both offered as signs, and the audience named is people of knowledge.
10:24 is here to stop the study becoming sentimental. The same formula closes a passage about a crop that flourishes until its owners think themselves masters of it, and is cut down overnight. The signs are not all consoling.
What runs through all of them is the audience. The formula almost never says FOR BELIEVERS. It says for people who REFLECT, who take thought, who have sense, who know. The study Does the Qur'an encourage reason and reflection?, now signed, found the same address; this study finds what it is pointed at.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 30:21, widening across 6 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 6 passages, each with every cleared translation
6 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

God created you; then He takes you away. Some of you will be brought back to the worst age, so that he will no longer know anything, after having acquired knowledge. God is Omniscient and Omnipotent.
And Allah createth you, then causeth you to die, and among you is he who is brought back to the most abject stage of life, so that he knoweth nothing after (having had) knowledge. Lo! Allah is Knower, Powerful
God created you; then He will take you to Himself; but amongst you are some whom He will thrust into the most decrepit age; so that he may not know aught that once he knew. Verily, God is knowing, powerful
And God hath created you; by and bye will he take you to himself; and some among you will he carry on to abject old age, when all that once was known is known no longer. Aye, God is Knowing, Powerful
God hath created you, and He will hereafter cause you to die: And some of you shall have his life prolonged to a decrepit age, so that he shall forget whatever he knew; for God is wise and powerful

God has favored some of you over others in livelihood. Those who are favored would not give their properties to their servants, to the extent of making them partners in it. Will they then renounce God's blessings?
And Allah hath favoured some of you above others in provision. Now those who are more favoured will by no means hand over their provision to those (slaves) whom their right hands possess, so that they may be equal with them in respect thereof. Is it then the grace of Allah that they deny
And God has preferred some of you over others in providing for you; but those who have been preferred will not restore their provision to those whom their right hands possess that they may share equally therein:- is it God's favours they gainsay
And God hath abounded to some of you more than to others in the supplies of life; yet they to whom He hath abounded, impart not thereof to the slaves whom their right hands possess, so that they may share alike. What! will they deny, then, that these boons are from God
God causeth some of you to excel others in worldly possessions: Yet they who are caused to excel, do not give their wealth unto the slaves whom their right hands possess, that they may become equal sharers therein. Do they therefore deny the beneficence of God

The likeness of the present life is this: water that We send down from the sky is absorbed by the plants of the earth, from which the people and the animals eat. Until, when the earth puts on its fine appearance, and is beautified, and its inhabitants think that they have mastered it, Our command descends upon it by night or by day, and We turn it into stubble, as if it had not flourished the day before. We thus clarify the revelations for people who reflect.

The similitude of the life of the world is only as water which We send down from the sky, then the earth's growth of that which men and cattle eat mingleth with it till, when the earth hath taken on her ornaments and is embellished, and her people deem that they are masters of her, Our commandment cometh by night or by day and We make it as reaped corn as if it had not flourished yesterday. Thus do we expound the revelations for people who reflect
Verily, the likeness of this world's life is like water which we send down from the sky, and the plants of the earth, from which men and cattle eat, are mingled therewith; until when the earth puts on its gilding and is adorned, the people thereof think that they have power over it. Our order comes to it by night or day, and we make it as it were mown down - as though it had not yesterday been rich!- Thus do we detail the signs unto a people who reflect
Verily, this present life is like the water which we send down from Heaven, and the produce of the earth, of which men and cattle eat, is mingled with it, till the earth hath received its golden raiment, and is decked out: and they who dwell on it deem that they have power over it! but, Our behest cometh to it by night or by day, and we make it as if it had been mown, as if it had not teemed only yesterday! Thus make we our signs clear to those who consider
Verily the likeness of this present life is no other than as water, which We send down from heaven, and wherewith the productions of the earth are mixed, of which men eat, and cattle also, until the earth receive its vesture, and be adorned with various plants: The inhabitants thereof imagine that they have power over the same; but our command cometh unto it by night, or by day, and we render it as though it had been mown, as though it had not yesterday abounded with fruits.

It is He who transports you across land and sea. Until, when you are on ships, sailing in a favorable wind, and rejoicing in it, a raging wind arrives. The waves surge over them from every side, and they realize that they are besieged. Thereupon they pray to God, professing sincere devotion to Him: "If You save us from this, we will be among the appreciative."
He it is Who maketh you to go on the land and the sea till, when ye are in the ships and they sail with them with a fair breeze and they are glad therein, a storm-wind reacheth them and the wave cometh unto them from every side and they deem that they are overwhelmed therein; (then) they cry unto Allah, making their faith pure for Him only: If Thou deliver us from this, we truly will be of the thankful
He it is who makes you travel in the land and sea, until when ye are in the ships - and these carry them afloat with a favouring wind, and they rejoice therein, there comes to them a violent wind, and there comes to them the wave from every place, and they think that they are encompassed about; then they call on God, sincere in religion towards Him, 'If thou dost save from this we will surely be of those who thank
He it is who enableth you to travel by land and sea, so that ye go on board of ships - which sail on with them, with favouring breeze in which they rejoice. But if a tempestuous gale overtake them, and the billow come on them from every side, and they think that they are encompassed therewith, they call on God, professing sincere religion: - "Wouldst thou but rescue us from this, then will we indeed be of the thankful
It is He who hath given you conveniencies for travelling by land and by sea; so that ye be in ships, which sail with them, with a favourable wind, and they rejoice therein. And when a tempestuous wind overtaketh them, and waves come upon them from every side, and they think themselves to be encompassed with inevitable dangers; they call upon God, exhibiting the pure religion unto Him, and saying, verily if Thou deliver us from this peril, we will be of those who give thanks

But then, when He has saved them, they commit violations on earth, and oppose justice. O people! Your violations are against your own souls. It is the enjoyment of the present life. Then to Us is your return, and We will inform you of what you used to do.
Yet when He hath delivered them, behold! they rebel in the earth wrongfully. O mankind! Your rebellion is only against yourselves. (Ye have) enjoyment of the life of the world; then unto Us is your return and We shall proclaim unto you what ye used to do
But when He has saved them, lo! they are willful in the earth unjustly;- O ye folk! your willfulness against yourselves is but a provision of this world's life; then unto us is your return, and we will inform you of that which ye have done
But when we have rescued them, lo! they commit unrighteous excesses on the earth! O men! assuredly your self-injuring excess is only an enjoyment of this life present: soon ye return to us: and we will let you know what ye have done
But when He had delivered them, behold, they behaved themselves insolently in the earth, without justice. O men, verily the violence which ye commit against your own souls, is for the enjoyment of this present life only; afterwards unto Us shall ye return, and We will declare unto you that which ye have done

For those who have done good is goodness, and more. Neither gloom nor shame will come over their faces. These are the inhabitants of Paradise, abiding therein forever.
For those who do good is the best (reward) and more (thereto). Neither dust nor ignominy cometh near their faces. Such are rightful owners of the Garden; they will abide therein
To those who do what is good, goodness and increase! nor shall blackness or abasement cover their faces! these are the fellows of Paradise, they shall dwell therein for aye
Goodness itself and an increase of it for those who do good! neither blackness nor shame shall cover their faces! These shall be the inmates of Paradise, therein shall they abide for ever
They who do right shall receive a most excellent reward, and a superabundant addition; neither blackness nor shame shall cover their faces. These shall be the inhabitants of paradise; they shall continue therein for ever
What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it5 of the 6 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 30:21, 30:22, 16:11, 16:69, 45:13, 10:24, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - portents + folk + who + reflect; signs + people + who + reflect; tokens + folk + who + have + sense; portents + men + understanding; signs + those + who + think. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 7 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 7:176 - the similitude of the dog; on-topic for reflection but its subject is a particular man; 13:3 - carried by the studies What does the Qur'an say about the mountains as 'pegs'? and What does the Qur'an say about night and day 'wrapping' each other?; 16:13 - near-identical to 16:11; 16:67 - the intoxicants clause belongs to the study How does the Qur'an describe the prohibition of wine - and does it present these four as stages?; 20:54 - near-identical in form to 16:11; 39:42 - carried by the study What does the Qur'an say about the moment the soul is taken - and what detail does it not give?; 51:20 - near-identical; the audience differs but adds nothing.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
