O you Enwrapped one.
What does Surah al-Muzzammil say?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 73:1 O thou wrapped up in thy raiment. This is here because it names the hearer by how he is covered rather than by name: "O thou wrapped up" in Sale, "O THOU ENFOLDED in thy mantle" in Rodwell, "O thou who art enwrapped" in Palmer and "O thou wrapped up in thy raiment" in Pickthall. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about praying at night (tahajjud)?, with a different reason there.
- 02 73:2 Keep vigil the night long, save a little. This is here because Sale and Rodwell alone say what the standing at night is for: "arise to prayer, and continue therein during the night" in Sale and "Stand up all night, except a small portion of it, for prayer" in Rodwell, against "rise by night except a little" in Palmer and "Keep vigil the night long, save a little" in Pickthall. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about praying at night (tahajjud)?, with a different reason there.
- 03 73:3 A half thereof, or abate a little thereof. This is here because it sets a measure and then allows it to be shortened: "Half; or curtail the half a little" in Rodwell, "the half or deduct therefrom a little" in Palmer, "A half thereof, or abate a little thereof" in Pickthall and "For half of it, or reduce it a little" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the study What does the Qur'an say about praying at night (tahajjud)?, with a different reason there.
- 04 73:4 Or add (a little) thereto - and chant the Qur'an in measure. This is here because it says how the reciting is to be done, and the renderings name the manner differently: "And repeat the Koran with a distinct and sonorous voice" in Sale, "And with measured tone intone the Koran" in Rodwell, "or add thereto, and chant the Qur'an chanting" in Palmer, "and chant the Qur'an in measure" in Pickthall and "and chant the Quran rhythmically" in Itani. ALSO CARRIED by the studies What does the Qur'an say about reciting it - slowly, aloud, by heart?, What does the Qur'an say about praying at night (tahajjud)? and Does the Qur'an say every letter recited earns reward - or is that from hadith?, with different reasons there.
- 05 73:5 For we shall charge thee with a word of weight. This is here because it gives the reason for all of it: "For We will lay on thee a weighty word" in Sale, "For we shall devolve on thee weighty words" in Rodwell, "Verily, we will cast on thee a heavy speech" in Palmer and "We are about to give you a heavy message" in Itani.
- 06 73:6 Lo! the vigil of the night is (a time) when impression is more keen and speech more certain. This is here because the renderings place the effective hour differently and name different benefits: "Verily the rising by night is more efficacious for stedfast continuance in devotion, and more conducive to decent pronunciation" in Sale, "Verily, at the oncoming of night are devout impressions strongest, and words are most collected" in Rodwell and "Verily, the early part of the night is stronger in impressions and more upright in speech" in Palmer, against "the vigil of the night is (a time) when impression is more keen and speech more certain" in Pickthall, with his own brackets.
- 07 73:7 Lo! thou hast by day a chain of business. This is here because it rules the day out by saying what fills it: "For in the day-time thou hast long employment" in Sale, "But in the day time thou hast continual employ" in Rodwell, "Verily, thou hast by day a long employment" in Palmer and "thou hast by day a chain of business" in Pickthall.
- 08 73:8 So remember the name of thy Lord and devote thyself with a complete devotion. This is here because Sale alone says what the devotion turns away from: "And commemorate the name of thy Lord: And separate thy self unto Him, renouncing worldly vanities" in Sale, against "And commemorate the name of thy Lord, and devote thyself to Him with entire devotion" in Rodwell, "but mention the name of thy Lord and devote thyself thoroughly to Him" in Palmer and "So remember the name of thy Lord and devote thyself with a complete devotion" in Pickthall.
- 09 73:9 Lord of the East and the West; there is no Allah save Him; so choose thou Him alone for thy defender. This is here because it names what is to be taken instead, and the renderings choose different words for it: "He is the Lord of the east, and of the west; there is no God but He" in Sale, "Take Him for thy protector" in Rodwell, "the Lord of the east and the west; there is no god but He; then take Him for a guardian" in Palmer and "so choose thou Him alone for thy defender" in Pickthall.
- 10 73:10 And bear with patience what they utter, and part from them with a fair leave-taking. This is here because the parting is read as a departure in most renderings and as flight in Palmer: "And patiently suffer the contumelies which the infidels utter against thee; and depart from them with a decent departure" in Sale, "And endure what they say with patience, and depart from them with a decorous departure" in Rodwell, "And bear with patience what they utter, and part from them with a fair leave-taking" in Pickthall and "And endure patiently what they say, and withdraw from them politely" in Itani, against "And endure patiently what they say, and flee from them with a decorous flight" in Palmer.
- 11 73:11 Leave Me to deal with the deniers, lords of ease and comfort (in this life); and do thou respite them awhile. This is here because Sale alone names what the deniers denied: "And let Me alone with those who charge the Koran with falsehood, who enjoy the blessings of this life; and bear with them for a while" in Sale, against "And let Me alone with the gainsayers, rich in the pleasures of this life; and bear thou with them yet a little while" in Rodwell, "And leave me and those who say it is a lie, who are possessed of comfort; and let them bide for a while" in Palmer and "Leave Me to deal with the deniers, lords of ease and comfort (in this life); and do thou respite them awhile" in Pickthall.
- 12 73:12 Lo! with Us are heavy fetters and a raging fire. This is here because it names what is held, and Palmer alone names the place: "Verily with Us are heavy fetters, and a burning fire" in Sale, "For with Us are strong fetters, and a flaming fire" in Rodwell and "With Us are shackles, and a Fierce Fire" in Itani, against "Verily, with us are heavy fetters and hell-fire" in Palmer.
- 13 73:13 And food which choketh (the partaker), and a painful doom. This is here because it names food that chokes, and Sale and Pickthall alone say who it chokes: "and food ready to choke him who swalloweth it, and painful torment" in Sale and "And food which choketh (the partaker), and a painful doom" in Pickthall, with his own brackets, against "And food that choketh, and a sore torment" in Rodwell and "and food that chokes, and mighty woe" in Palmer.
- 14 73:14 On the day when the earth and the hills rock, and the hills become a heap of running sand. This is here because it fixes that to a day, and the renderings differ over what becomes sand: "On a certain day the earth shall be shaken, and the mountains also, and the mountains shall become a heap of sand poured forth" in Sale and "The day cometh when the earth and the mountains shall be shaken; and the mountains shall become a loose sand heap" in Rodwell, against "On the day when the earth and the mountains shall tremble and the earth shall be as a crumbling sand-hill" in Palmer.
- 15 73:15 Lo! We have sent unto you a messenger as witness against you, even as We sent unto Pharaoh a messenger. This is here because it sets a messenger sent now beside one sent to Pharaoh: "Verily We have sent unto you an apostle, to bear witness against you; as We sent an apostle unto Pharaoh" in Sale, "Verily, we have sent unto you an apostle bearing witness against you, as we sent an apostle unto Pharaoh" in Palmer and "We have sent unto you a messenger as witness against you, even as We sent unto Pharaoh a messenger" in Pickthall.
- 16 73:16 But Pharaoh rebelled against the messenger, whereupon We seized him with no gentle grip. This is here because it says what followed, and the renderings name the grip differently: "But Pharaoh was disobedient unto the apostle; wherefore We chastised him with a heavy chastisement" in Sale, "But Pharaoh rebelled against the apostle, and we seized him with an overpowering punishment" in Palmer, "But Pharaoh rebelled against the messenger, whereupon We seized him with no gentle grip" in Pickthall and "But Pharaoh defied the Messenger, so We seized him with a terrible seizing" in Itani.
- 17 73:17 Then how, if ye disbelieve, will ye protect yourselves upon the day which will turn children grey. This is here because Sale alone supplies the cause behind the image: "the day which shall make children become greyheaded through terror" in Sale, against "the day that shall turn children greyheaded" in Rodwell, "the day which shall make children grey-headed" in Palmer and "the day which will turn children grey" in Pickthall.
- 18 73:18 The very heaven being then rent asunder. His promise is to be fulfilled. This is here because it says what is fulfilled, and Rodwell alone calls it a threat: "The heaven shall be rent in sunder thereby: The promise thereof shall surely be performed" in Sale and "whereon the heaven cleaves - its promise shall be fulfilled" in Palmer, against "The very heaven shall be reft asunder by it: this threat shall be carried into effect" in Rodwell.
- 19 73:19 Lo! This is a Reminder. Let him who will, then, choose a way unto his Lord. This is here because it leaves the taking of the way to the hearer: "Verily this is an admonition; and whoever is willing to be admonished, will take the way unto his Lord" in Sale, "this is a warning" in Rodwell, "Verily, this is a memorial, and whoso will, let him take unto his Lord a way" in Palmer and "Let him who will, then, choose a way unto his Lord" in Pickthall.
- 20 73:20 Lo! thy Lord knoweth how thou keepest vigil sometimes nearly two-thirds of the night, or (sometimes) half or a third thereof, as do a party of those with thee. Allah measureth the night and the day. He knoweth that ye count it not, and turneth unto you in mercy. Recite, then, of the Qur'an that which is easy for you. He knoweth that there are sick folk among you, while others travel in the land in search of Allah's bounty, and others (still) are fighting for the cause of Allah. So recite of it that which is easy (for you), and establish worship and pay the poor-due, and (so) lend unto Allah a goodly loan. Whatsoever good ye send before you for your souls, ye will find it with Allah, better and greater in the recompense. And seek forgiveness of Allah. Lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. This is here because it is much the longest verse of the surah and it loosens the measure the surah opened with, naming the sick, the travelling and the fighting: "Read, therefore, so much of the Koran as may be easy unto you" in Sale, "Recite then so much of the Koran as may be easy to you" in Rodwell, "So read what is easy of the Qur'an" in Palmer, "Recite, then, of the Qur'an that which is easy for you" in Pickthall and "So read of the Quran what is possible for you" in Itani; the same verse asks for "lend unto God an acceptable loan" in Sale and "lend to God a goodly loan" in Palmer. ALSO CARRIED by the studies Does the Qur'an require reciting the Opening (al-Fatiha) in every prayer?, What does the Qur'an say about how much of it to recite in prayer?, What does the Qur'an say about praying at night (tahajjud)?, What does the Qur'an say about a 'goodly loan to God' repaid many times over?, Does the Qur'an say every letter recited earns reward - or is that from hadith? and Does the Qur'an promise a specific reward for reciting particular surahs?, with different reasons there.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Surah al-Muzzammil is twenty verses long. It opens by addressing someone wrapped in a garment, tells him to stand at night and recite, says why the night is the time for it, and closes on a long verse that relaxes the measure it began with.
73:1 names the hearer by how he is covered rather than by name: "O thou wrapped up" in Sale, "O THOU ENFOLDED in thy mantle" in Rodwell, "O thou who art enwrapped" in Palmer and "O thou wrapped up in thy raiment" in Pickthall. 73:2-4 give the instruction and its measure, and Sale and Rodwell alone say what the standing is for: "arise to prayer, and continue therein during the night" in Sale and "Stand up all night, except a small portion of it, for prayer" in Rodwell, where Palmer has only "rise by night except a little". The portion is then halved or adjusted - "the half or deduct therefrom a little" in Palmer - and the reciting is to be measured: "And repeat the Koran with a distinct and sonorous voice" in Sale, "And with measured tone intone the Koran" in Rodwell and "and chant the Qur'an in measure" in Pickthall. The studies What does the Qur'an say about praying at night (tahajjud)?, What does the Qur'an say about reciting it - slowly, aloud, by heart? and Does the Qur'an say every letter recited earns reward - or is that from hadith? carry parts of this opening, each with its own reason.
73:5 states why: "For We will lay on thee a weighty word" in Sale, "For we shall devolve on thee weighty words" in Rodwell, "Verily, we will cast on thee a heavy speech" in Palmer and "We are about to give you a heavy message" in Itani.
73:6-7 give the reason for choosing the night, and the renderings place that time differently: "Verily the rising by night is more efficacious for stedfast continuance in devotion, and more conducive to decent pronunciation" in Sale, "Verily, at the oncoming of night are devout impressions strongest, and words are most collected" in Rodwell and "Verily, the early part of the night is stronger in impressions and more upright in speech" in Palmer, against "the vigil of the night is (a time) when impression is more keen and speech more certain" in Pickthall, in his own brackets. The day is ruled out because it is full: "For in the day-time thou hast long employment" in Sale and "thou hast by day a chain of business" in Pickthall.
73:8-10 say what to do and how to leave, and Sale alone adds what the devotion turns away from - "And commemorate the name of thy Lord: And separate thy self unto Him, renouncing worldly vanities" - and the parting is read as a departure in Sale and Rodwell and as flight in Palmer: "And patiently suffer the contumelies which the infidels utter against thee; and depart from them with a decent departure" in Sale and "And endure what they say with patience, and depart from them with a decorous departure" in Rodwell, against "And endure patiently what they say, and flee from them with a decorous flight" in Palmer.
73:11-14 name what is left to the one speaking. Sale alone says what the deniers denied: "And let Me alone with those who charge the Koran with falsehood, who enjoy the blessings of this life; and bear with them for a while", where Rodwell has "And let Me alone with the gainsayers, rich in the pleasures of this life; and bear thou with them yet a little while" and Palmer "And leave me and those who say it is a lie, who are possessed of comfort; and let them bide for a while". What is held is "Verily with Us are heavy fetters, and a burning fire" in Sale, with "and food that chokes, and mighty woe" in Palmer, on a day described as "On a certain day the earth shall be shaken, and the mountains also, and the mountains shall become a heap of sand poured forth" in Sale.
73:15-18 set a messenger sent now beside one sent to Pharaoh: "Verily We have sent unto you an apostle, to bear witness against you; as We sent an apostle unto Pharaoh" in Sale, and what followed was "But Pharaoh was disobedient unto the apostle; wherefore We chastised him with a heavy chastisement" in Sale and "But Pharaoh rebelled against the messenger, whereupon We seized him with no gentle grip" in Pickthall. The day named at 73:17 is "the day which shall make children become greyheaded through terror" in Sale, where Rodwell, Palmer and Pickthall give the same image without the cause.
73:19 calls what has been said a reminder - "Verily this is an admonition; and whoever is willing to be admonished, will take the way unto his Lord" in Sale - and 73:20, much the longest verse of the surah, returns to the measure set at the start and loosens it, naming the sick, the travelling and the fighting as reasons: "Read, therefore, so much of the Koran as may be easy unto you" in Sale, "So read what is easy of the Qur'an" in Palmer and "So read of the Quran what is possible for you" in Itani. The same verse asks for a loan: "lend unto God an acceptable loan" in Sale, "lend God a liberal loan" in Rodwell, "lend to God a goodly loan" in Palmer and "lend God a generous loan" in Itani. The studies Does the Qur'an require reciting the Opening (al-Fatiha) in every prayer?, What does the Qur'an say about how much of it to recite in prayer?, What does the Qur'an say about praying at night (tahajjud)?, What does the Qur'an say about a 'goodly loan to God' repaid many times over?, Does the Qur'an say every letter recited earns reward - or is that from hadith? and Does the Qur'an promise a specific reward for reciting particular surahs? all carry 73:20, each with its own reason.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which uncleared source would be needed. It does not say when the long closing verse was given relative to the short instruction it loosens, or whether one replaced the other in practice. That is a question about revelation order and about how the community acted, and answering it needs an occasion of revelation, a or a biography: this study holds none of those in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read the surah: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 73:1, widening across 20 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 20 passages, each with every cleared translation
20 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

The vigil of night is more effective, and better suited for recitation.
Lo! the vigil of the night is (a time) when impression is more keen and speech more certain
Verily, the early part of the night is stronger in impressions and more upright in speech

Verily the rising by night is more efficacious for stedfast continuance in devotion, and more conducive to decent pronunciation

Min nelii e mon nelaaɗo haa o wona seede e dow mon hono no min nelduno fa'ade e Fir'awna nelaaɗo.
15. Iš tiesų, Mes siuntėme jums Pasiuntinį (Muchammedą ﷺ ), liudytoju jums taip, kaip Mes siuntėme Pasiuntinį (Mūsą (Mozę)) Firaunui (Faraonui).
Nuti gara keessanitti Ergamaa ragaa isin irratti ba'u erginee jirra, akkuma gara Fir'awn Ergamaa (muusaa) ergineetti.

Your Lord knows that you stay up nearly two-thirds of the night, or half of it, or one-third of it, along with a group of those with you. God designed the night and the day. He knows that you are unable to sustain it, so He has pardoned you. So read of the Quran what is possible for you. He knows that some of you may be ill; and others travelling through the land, seeking God's bounty; and others fighting in God's cause. So read of it what is possible for you, and observe the prayers, and give regular charity, and lend God a generous loan. Whatever good you advance for yourselves, you will find it with God, better and generously rewarded. And seek God's forgiveness, for God is Forgiving and Merciful.
Lo! thy Lord knoweth how thou keepest vigil sometimes nearly two-thirds of the night, or (sometimes) half or a third thereof, as do a party of those with thee. Lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful
Verily, thy Lord knows that thou dost stand up to pray nearly two-thirds of the night, or the half of it or the third of it, as do part of those who are with thee; for God measures the night and the day; He knows that ye cannot calculate it, and He turns relentant towards you. So read what is easy of the Qur'an. He knows that there will be of you some who are sick and others who beat about in the earth craving the grace of God, and others who are fighting in the cause of God. Then read what is easy of it and be steadfast in prayer, and give alms, and lend to God a goodly loan, for what ye send forward for yourselves of good ye will find it with God. It is better and a greater hire; and ask ye pardon of God: verily, God is forgiving, merciful
Of a truth, thy Lord knoweth that thou prayest almost two-thirds, or half, or a third of the night, as do a part of thy followers. But God measureth the night and the day: He knoweth that ye cannot count its hours aright, and therefore, turneth to you mercifully. Recite then so much of the Koran as may be easy to you. He knoweth that there will be some among you sick, while others travel through the earth in quest of the bounties of God; and others do battle in his cause. Recite therefore so much of it as may be easy. And observe the Prayers and pay the legal Alms, and lend God a liberal loan: for whatever good works ye send on before for your own behoof, ye shall find with God. This will be best and richest in the recompense. And seek the forgiveness of God: verily, God is forgiving, Merciful
Thy Lord knoweth that thou continuest in prayer and meditation sometimes near two third parts of the night, and sometimes one half thereof, and at other times one third part thereof: And a part of thy companions, who are with thee, do the same. But God measureth the night and the day; he knoweth that ye cannot exactly compute the same: Wherefore He turneth favourably unto you. Read, therefore, so much of the Koran as may be easy unto you. He knoweth that there will be some infirm among you; and others travel through the earth, that they may obtain a competency of the bounty of God; and others fight in the defence of God's faith. Read, therefore, so much of the same as may be easy. And observe the stated times of prayer, and pay the legal alms; and lend unto God an acceptable loan; for whatever good ye send before for your souls, ye shall find the same with God. This will be better, and will merit a greater reward. And ask God forgiveness; for God is ready to forgive, and merciful

The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none.

- Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

So lest (bei Nacht), was euch vom Quran leichtfällt.
In verità Allāh è Perdonatore, Misericordioso.

Öyleyse Kur’an’dan (bildiğiniz) kolayınıza geleni okuyun.

The heaven will shatter thereby. His promise is always fulfilled.
The very heaven being then rent asunder. His promise is to be fulfilled
whereon the heaven cleaves - its promise shall be fulfilled
The very heaven shall be reft asunder by it: this threat shall be carried into effect
The heaven shall be rent in sunder thereby: The promise thereof shall surely be performed

This is a reminder. So whoever wills, let him take a path to his Lord.
Lo! This is a Reminder. Let him who will, then, choose a way unto his Lord
Verily, this is a memorial, and whoso will, let him take unto his Lord a way
Lo! this is a warning. Let him then who will, take the way to his Lord
Verily this is an admonition; and whoever is willing to be admonished, will take the way unto his Lord

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it4 of the 5 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across five translations - the four public-domain renderings of Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880 and Pickthall 1930, and Itani 2012 - of 73:1-20, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified.
How this set was arrived at. This is a study of one surah, so it carries every verse of it: all twenty verses of Surah al-Muzzammil, each as its own passage with its own reason. No verse of the surah is left out, so none is recorded as not carried.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the renderings part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
