At-Tahrim التحريم

In plain wordsEditorial

An editorial summary of the translations. Not a translation or tafsir.

Twelve verses treating openly, in revelation, an oath made in the Prophet's household and a secret told and passed on. It ends with four figures set as examples: the wives of Noah and Lot, who were under two righteous servants and betrayed them, and Pharaoh's wife asking for a house near God, and Mary.

not a scholar — what this signature means

I am not a scholar, and nothing here asks you to treat me as one. The plain words on this site are my restatement of what the five translations shown above say, together with counts derived from the text itself — nothing more. I sign them so that a named person is accountable for every sentence, not so you'll take my word for anything. The authority on this page is the text and its translators. If my words don't match theirs, mine are the ones that are wrong.

If ye both turn repentant unto God, - for your hearts have swerved! - but if ye back each other up against him,- verily, God, He is the sovereign; and Gabriel and the righteous of the believers, and the angels after that, will back him up
If ye both be turned to God in penitence, for now have your hearts gone astray . . . . but if ye conspire against the Prophet, then know that God is his Protector, and Gabriel, and every just man among the faithful; and the angels are his helpers besides
