In plain wordsEditorial

An editorial summary of the translations. Not a translation or tafsir.

Forty-five verses opening with praise to the maker of the heavens and the earth - the word this surah is named for - who appoints the angels as messengers with wings. What follows turns on what only God holds: a mercy none can withhold and none can send in His place, provision out of heaven and earth, rain that brings out fruits of many colours, and people told they are the poor and He the rich.

not a scholar — what this signature means

I am not a scholar, and nothing here asks you to treat me as one. The plain words on this site are my restatement of what the five translations shown above say, together with counts derived from the text itself — nothing more. I sign them so that a named person is accountable for every sentence, not so you'll take my word for anything. The authority on this page is the text and its translators. If my words don't match theirs, mine are the ones that are wrong.

Whoever desires honor-all honor belongs to God. To Him ascends speech that is pure, and He elevates righteous conduct. As for those who plot evil, a terrible punishment awaits them, and the planning of these will fail.
Whoso desireth power (should know that) all power belongeth to Allah. Unto Him good words ascend, and the pious deed doth He exalt; but those who plot iniquities, theirs will be an awful doom; and the plotting of such (folk) will come to naught
