In plain wordsEditorial

An editorial summary of the translations. Not a translation or tafsir.

Thirty-four verses built around a father's advice to his son, quoted directly: do not associate anything with God, be grateful, be moderate in your walk, lower your voice — the harshest of voices is the braying of a donkey. It takes its name from the man giving it, described as having been given wisdom. It opens with disconnected letters.

not a scholar — what this signature means

I am not a scholar, and nothing here asks you to treat me as one. The plain words on this site are my restatement of what the five translations shown above say, together with counts derived from the text itself — nothing more. I sign them so that a named person is accountable for every sentence, not so you'll take my word for anything. The authority on this page is the text and its translators. If my words don't match theirs, mine are the ones that are wrong.

And if a wave enshroudeth them like awnings, they cry unto Allah, making their faith pure for Him only. But when He bringeth them safe to land, some of them compromise. None denieth Our signs save every traitor ingrate
When the waves cover them like dark shadows they call upon God as with sincere religion; but when He safely landeth them, some of them there are who halt between two opinions. Yet none reject our signs but all deceitful, ungrateful ones
