Al-Hujuraat الحجرات

In plain wordsEditorial

An editorial summary of the translations. Not a translation or tafsir.

Eighteen verses about conduct between people. Not raising voices before the Prophet, checking what a report says before acting on it, making peace between believers who fall to fighting, and a run of prohibitions - no ridicule, no defamation, no nicknames, no suspicion, no spying, no backbiting. It takes its name from the apartments called from behind at verse 4.

not a scholar — what this signature means

I am not a scholar, and nothing here asks you to treat me as one. The plain words on this site are my restatement of what the five translations shown above say, together with counts derived from the text itself — nothing more. I sign them so that a named person is accountable for every sentence, not so you'll take my word for anything. The authority on this page is the text and its translators. If my words don't match theirs, mine are the ones that are wrong.

If two groups of believers fight each other, reconcile between them. But if one group aggresses against the other, fight the aggressing group until it complies with God's command. Once it has complied, reconcile between them with justice, and be equitable. God loves the equitable.
And if two parties of believers fall to fighting, then make peace between them. And if one party of them doeth wrong to the other, fight ye that which doeth wrong till it return unto the ordinance of Allah; then, if it return, make peace between them justly, and act equitably.
