And do not extend your glance towards what We have given some classes of them to enjoy-the splendor of the life of this world-that We may test them thereby. Your Lord's provision is better, and more lasting.
What does the Qur'an say about gratitude and contentment in hardship?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 20:131 And STRAIN NOT THINE EYES TOWARD THAT WHICH WE CAUSE SOME WEDDED PAIRS AMONG THEM TO ENJOY - the flower of the life of the world, that We may try them thereby. The provision of thy Lord is better and more lasting. In because it is the central instruction, it is addressed to the Prophet, and it names comparison with others as the thing to stop doing.
- 02 15:88 Strain not thine eyes toward that which We cause some wedded pairs among them to enjoy, and BE NOT GRIEVED ON THEIR ACCOUNT, and lower thy wing of mercy unto the believers. In because it repeats the instruction and adds two things - do not grieve over them, and turn toward your own people instead.
- 03 9:59 (How much more seemly) had they been CONTENT with that which God and His messenger had given them, and had said: God sufficeth us; God will give us of His bounty, and His messenger - unto God we are suppliants. In because it puts the contented response in direct speech, as the words that should have been said, and because it does not deny that they had a grievance.
- 04 27:19 And (Solomon) smiled, laughing at her speech, and said: MY LORD, AROUSE ME TO BE THANKFUL for Thy favour wherewith Thou hast favoured me and my parents. Here Solomon asks his Lord to arouse him to be thankful for the favour shown to him and his parents, so thankfulness is something he prays to be given.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
Four verses, and the instruction at the centre of them is unexpectedly specific.
20:131 and 15:88 both say the same thing in nearly the same words, and it is not be content. It is STRAIN NOT THINE EYES TOWARD what others have been given. The word all four translators reach for is about looking - stretching the gaze. The text identifies the problem as comparison, and it addresses the instruction to the Prophet himself.
20:131 then adds two clauses that carry the argument. What others have is THE FLOWER OF THE LIFE OF THE WORLD, given THAT WE MAY TRY THEM THEREBY - so the thing being envied is described as a test being administered to someone else. And: the provision of thy Lord is BETTER AND MORE LASTING.
15:88 adds: BE NOT GRIEVED ON THEIR ACCOUNT - and then turns the gaze somewhere useful, lower thy wing to the believers.
9:59 supplies the words that should have been said by people who felt short-changed in a distribution: GOD SUFFICETH US; God will give us of His bounty. The verse says how much more seemly it would have been - it does not say their grievance was imaginary.
27:19 is the one that keeps this study honest. Solomon, at the height of his wealth and power, does not declare himself grateful. He asks to be MADE ABLE TO BE grateful. Gratitude is treated as a capacity to be given rather than a duty to be performed.
Contentment in hardship, in these verses, is mostly a matter of where you are looking. The wider material on gratitude is carried by What does the Qur'an say about gratitude?, and on patience by the study What does the Qur'an say about patience through trial?
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 20:131, widening across 4 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.
The versesSource fact 4 passages, each with every cleared translation
4 passages, chosen for this question and signed as part of it. Each carries the reason it is here, and each renders in full: the Arabic, then every cleared translation of that verse under its translator's name.
Each verse opens on the translation that comes first in the site's fixed order, which runs from the newest translation to the oldest. The order is not a preference. Open Compare translations on any verse to read the others.

Were it not for a word that issued from your Lord, the inevitable would have happened, but there is an appointed term.
And but for a decree that had already gone forth from thy Lord, and a term already fixed, the judgment would have been inevitable (in this world)
And had it not been for thy Lord's word already passed (the punishment) would have been inevitable and (at) an appointed time
And had not a decree of respite from thy Lord first gone forth, their chastisement had at once ensued. Yet the time is fixed
And unless a decree had previously gone forth from thy Lord for their respite, verily their destruction had necessarily followed: But there is a certain time determined by God for their punishment

So bear patiently what they say, and celebrate the praises of your Lord before the rising of the sun, and before its setting. And during the hours of the night glorify Him, and at the borders of the day, that you may be satisfied.
Therefor (O Muhammad), bear with what they say, and celebrate the praise of thy Lord ere the rising of the sun and ere the going down thereof. And glorify Him some hours of the night and at the two ends of the day, that thou mayst find acceptance
Bear patiently then what they say, and celebrate the praises of thy Lord before the rising of the sun, and before its setting, and at times in the night celebrate them; and at the ends of the day; haply thou mayest please (Him)
Put up then with what they say; and celebrate the praise of thy Lord before the sunrise, and before its setting; and some time in the night do thou praise him, and in the extremes of the day, that thou haply mayest please Him
Wherefore do thou, O Mohammed, patiently bear that which they say; and celebrate the praise of thy Lord before the rising of the sun, and before the setting thereof, and praise him in the hours of the night, and in the extremities of the day, that thou mayest be well pleased with the prospect of receiving favour from God

Would that they were satisfied with that which God and His Apostle had given them, and would say "God sufficeth us! God will vouchsafe unto us of His favour, and so will His Apostle: verily unto God do we make our suit

19. Taigi jis [Suleimanas (Saliamos)] nusišypsojo, patenkintas jos kalba, ir tarė: „Mano Viešpaties, suteik man galią ir gebėjimą, kad aš būčiau dėkingas už Tavo Malones, kurias Tu suteikei man ir mano tėvams, ir kad aš daryčiau teisingus gerus darbus, kurie patenkintų Tave, ir priimk mane Savo Gailesntingumu tarp Savo teisingųjų vergų.“

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it6 of the 7 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 20:131, 15:88, 9:59, 27:19, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani 2012, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for this study.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - well + pleased + with + them + they + well + pleased; strain + not + thine + eyes; god + sufficeth + us; pleasing + unto + thee. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
What was returned and not carried. 2 verse(s) the search qualified are recorded as not carried with a reason each, rather than silently discarded: 10:29 - matched on 'sufficeth'; the subject is disowning at the Judgment; 19:6 - Zachariah's prayer - the study What is Zachariah's prayer for a child? takes it up.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
Correction record, 2026-09-17. At 27:19, the reason said another study carries this verse, which it does not; the cross-reference was removed. The verses shown and their translations are unchanged.
