And We made the sky a protected ceiling; yet they turn away from its wonders.
What does the Qur'an say about the sky as a 'protected roof'?
Key findingsEditorial
One finding for each passage this study carries, in the order the study reads them. Each is the reason that passage was signed into the study, in full and unedited - including, where the renderings disagree, the disagreement.
- 01 21:32 And We have made the sky a roof WITHHELD - guarded, protected - yet they turn away from its portents. In because it is the ONLY verse in the four cleared renderings that calls the sky a roof and says it is kept or guarded, and because the second clause turns the statement into a reproach about signs ignored.
- 02 41:12 Pickthall has "We decked the nether heaven with lamps, and rendered it inviolable", and Itani has "with lamps, and for protection". It is here because it is one of the places the heaven is described as guarded, here the lower heaven with its lamps, and it is also carried by What does the Qur'an say about the seven heavens?, where the reason is different.
- 03 22:65 Pickthall has "He holdeth back the heaven from falling on the earth unless by His leave", and the other four print the sky held so that it does not fall. It is here because it is the verse raised against this one: it says the sky is held from falling, and the question asks what that pictures.
- 04 35:41 Rodwell has "God holdeth fast the Heavens and the Earth that they pass not away". Itani has "lest they fall apart". It is here because it says the same holding of the heavens and the earth together, and names no one else who could hold them.
- 05 52:44 Pickthall has "a fragment of the heaven falling", which those who see it would call "A heap of clouds". It is here because it pictures part of the sky coming down, and it is said of people who would not heed it.
In plain wordsEditorial written by the editors, not a translation
One verse says it, and it should be read whole.
21:32: We have made the sky a roof withheld - and the five translators render that phrase as a roof withheld, a guarded roof, a protected ceiling, a roof strongly upholden, a roof well supported. Then the clause that always gets dropped: YET THEY TURN AWAY FROM ITS PORTENTS. The verse is not making an announcement about atmospheric physics. It is complaining that people are not paying attention to the signs above them.
41:12 is one of the places the sky is described as kept: the nearest heaven decked with lamps and rendered inviolable. Elsewhere the text is more specific about what it is guarded FROM, and the answer given there is eavesdropping devils rather than meteorites or radiation.
That matters for the claim usually attached to this verse - that a protected roof anticipates the ozone layer or the magnetosphere. Nothing in 21:32 says what the sky is protected from or protects. None of these five verses says what the heaven is guarded against: at 41:12 Palmer and Rodwell print "guardian angels" and Sale prints "a guard of angels", without saying against what.
22:65 is the verse raised against this one, read as picturing a sky that could fall. Pickthall has "He holdeth back the heaven from falling on the earth unless by His leave". Itani has "He holds up the sky lest it falls on earth". The verse sets this beside the ships that sail by His command, and it ends on mercy. 35:41 says the same of the heavens and the earth together, and Rodwell has "God holdeth fast the Heavens and the Earth that they pass not away". 52:44 pictures a piece of the sky coming down, and Pickthall has "a fragment of the heaven falling".
Two of the five render 21:32 itself in this sense rather than as guarded. Sale has "a roof well supported". Rodwell has "a roof strongly upholden". These verses say that the sky is held and who holds it. They do not say what it is made of, or how it is held.
So: the text calls the sky a roof, and says it is kept. At 22:65 and 35:41 it says God holds it. What these five verses do not do is say from what it is guarded, or claim to be describing a mechanism.
Scope of this study
This platform shows the verse, its easy-read line, its translations, a plain-words reading, and each verse among its neighbours. It does not supply occasion of revelation, interpretation (tafsir) or history, and it never invents them.
What this study does not answer, and which source would be needed. It does not say on what occasion any of these verses was given: this study holds no source whose usage rights can be verified. It does not report how any commentator has read them: this study holds no either - the Arabic of , and is public domain by age, but no English edition with verifiable usage rights exists. And it offers no academic-historical reading: this study holds no such scholarship. Each of those is an absence with a named cause, not an omission.
What this rests on
Opens with 21:32, widening across 5 passages in all.
Easy-read is a simplified pronunciation, not authoritative — a rule-by-rule romanisation, not a reading. Each verse ends in its pause form, as it is said when you stop there. Pauses inside a verse and other tajwid rules are not shown. It is derived from the Tanzil Simple edition, while the Arabic above is the Uthmani edition; both are cleared, but they are not the same edition and their orthography differs.

Say: Have ye seen your partner-gods to whom ye pray beside Allah? Show me what they created of the earth! Or have they any portion in the heavens? Or have We given them a scripture so they act on clear proof therefrom? Nay, the evil-doers promise one another only to deceive
Say, 'Have ye considered your associates whom ye call on beside God?' show me what they created of the earth ; have they a share in the heavens, or have we given them a book that they rest on a manifest sign? nay the unjust promise each other naught but guile
SAY: What think ye of the gods whom ye invoke beside God? Shew me what part of the earth they have created? Had they a share in the creation of the Heavens? Have we given them a Book in which they can find proofs that they are to be called on? Nay, the wicked promise one another only deceits
Say, what think ye of your deities which ye invoke besides God? Shew me what part of the earth they have created. Or had they any share in the creation of the heavens? Priding themselves on earth, and scheming evil. But evil scheming overwhelms none but its authors. Do they expect anything but the precedent of the ancients? You will not find any change in God's practice, and you will not find any substitute to God's practice.
(Shown in their) behaving arrogantly in the land and plotting evil; and the evil plot encloseth but the men who make it. Then, can they expect aught save the treatment of the folk of old? Thou wilt not find for Allah's way of treatment any substitute, nor wilt thou find for Allah's way of treatment aught of power to change
and in being big with pride in the earth, and in plotting evil; but the plotting of evil only entangles those who practise it; can they then expect aught but the course of those of yore? but thou shalt not find any alteration in the course of God; and they shall not find any change in the course of God
Their haughtiness on earth and their plotting of evil! But the plotting of evil shall only enmesh those who make use of it. Look they then for aught but God's way of dealing with the peoples of old? Thou shalt not find any change in the way of God, - Yea, thou shalt not find any variableness in the way of God
their arrogance in the earth, and their contriving of evil; but the contrivance of evil shall only encompass the authors thereof. Do they expect any other than the punishment awarded against the unbelievers of former times? For thou shalt not find any change in the ordinance of God; neither shalt thou find any variation in the ordinance of God

- Hafs/Kufan verse numbering, 6236 ayahs. The bismillah is delivered as a separate `bismillah` attribute on ayah 1 and is NOT fused into the ayah text. 112 surahs carry one: every surah except al-Fatiha, where the bismillah is ayah 1:1 itself, and at-Tawba, which has none. Sourced from the XML output; the plain-text output of the same release DOES fuse it, which is defect D1.

What this study rests on, and what it refusessigned with it6 of the 7 paragraphs signed with this study; the paragraph naming what it does not answer is at the top of the page
The selection above and this account of it are part of what was signed. Where the renderings disagree it says so; where the question runs past what has cleared the rights audit it says that too.
Read across the four public-domain translations - Sale 1734, Rodwell 1861, Palmer 1880, Pickthall 1930 - of 21:32, 41:12, in full, and nothing else. This study consults no , no , no occasion of revelation and no biography, because none is yet available in an edition whose usage rights can be verified. Itani, the fifth translation shown with these verses, was not consulted for the first reading of 21:32 and 41:12; 22:65, 35:41 and 52:44, and 21:32 again beside them, were read in all five translations, Itani included.
How this set was arrived at. The verses were found by a word search of the four public-domain translations, using terms chosen by the editor and listed here as they were searched - roof; canopy; heaven + guarded; well + guarded; heaven + preserved. The search was a way of finding passages, not a judgement about what they mean: that several translators chose the same English word is not evidence about the Arabic. A different choice of terms gives a different set.
Three verses were added because the question also asks whether the sky could fall. A search of all five translations for the sky falling on the earth returned one verse, 22:65, in all five. A search for a fragment or lumps of the sky returned one verse, 52:44, in all five. 35:41 is carried because it says the same holding of the heavens and the earth together; a search for its verbs of holding returned it in four of the five.
Verses carried by more than one study. Some passages here also serve another study. Each carries its own reason in each place, and the reason states where else it appears.
Where the translations part company, named rather than resolved. How differently the translations word each verse is shown on that verse's page, and the study names the differences it turns on rather than choosing between them.
Nor does it compare these verses with any account of the sky from outside the text. That comparison is science, which this study does not make.
